I finally got my Baldwind transfer unit done - just in time to bring to the PRRT&HS annual meeting this week.  Quite a nice model kit from James Norris and Shapeways.

Painting the FUD was a bit challenging - with some areas textured, the gloss DGLE appeared a mishmash of matte and gloss.  I brushed on Future before decaling and used plenty of Microscale red decal setting solution.  The decals settled nicely, but the model still had a variety of matte and gloss finishes.  But a rather heavy coast of satin acrylic finish evened everything out and made for a decent finish if not some anxiety getting there.

That's gorgeous, Doug, both before and after. I have a couple of James' DD35s on the bench that came out fuzzy and I obliterated too much detail trying to get them smooth. These were fairly early in the Shapeways process, so they've obviously made great strides in output quality. We're trying again with FXD, I hope to see them in about three weeks.

WELL DONE!!!!

Maybe it's the brass, but it's also the finish.  However it was done, its one of the best Shapeways diesel shell results I've ever seen.

Doug,

Where did you get the stand offs for the antennae?

From reading about this model when it was offered for sale here, I recall that all the brass parts were photo-etched and sold with the model.  If you look at the antennas, they look flat  (since they are photo-etched from a sheet of brass).  Antenna wire and standoffs are single etching.

Doug, a wonderful job on the Baldwin! I'm having a similar challenge with my "ATSF black"; the shell I spray painted has an annoyingly inconsistent sheen ... (I'd post a pic, but can't, get "uploader full" message) it's what's keeping me from finishing my model. Do I understand correctly you solved the problem with a clear coat of matte finish?
Nice work on a very unique locomotive!

Otto:  Yes, after decaling I sprayed a finish coat of clear matte (actually satin) and it evened everything out.  So finish that model.

Craig:  the etched brass details, which include the Trainphone antennae was available separately from James Norris. The brass parts also included handrails.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

This Baldwin transfer unit has been on my wish list for a long time.

Doug.

Doug, Thanks for posting the photos, looks great. I see you added your own grabs, nice. A couple of questions, in the unpainted photo, on the right side, above the headlight, appears something brass, what is that? And on the ends there appears to be extra brass parts, what are they and do you have a photo of the nose?
Never argue with idiots; they'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

    Bill -
I'm shocked by the diameter of the handrails.

If only someone made etched replacement sets...

Never going to happen.  The parts would be too delicate.   Plus, not enough modelers care to install them, so any such market is extremely small.
