OK, how about we get back on track?

Here's how the snow scene was photographed. Not much to it. I used plaster for snow, some bare super trees and a crude hand painted backdrop ala Bob Ross.

I think a bit of Baking Soda could have really set the tone a little better than just plain plaster, but it was still a great shot and a great article.
I'll be honest though I'd love to see a modern version of pike size trains.
I already know about the Missouri River Runner and it's four daily trains and how they are set up. Three Horizon fleet coaches and one Amfleet Cafe car in trailing or in front of the Horizon coaches depending on the direction of travel, and of course the single P42 or F40PH depending on your era. (to include one anniversary loco #66 which spent alot of time in Missouri.)

Really? I'd like to see how that would set the tone better....maybe you have some shots to share?

Actually, I had the same perplexed response. Is baking soda the Spanish fly of model railroading?

I also had a "Huh?" moment after reading that baking soda post.  But then, this is TRW - we welcome constructive criticism here.

So I started thinking: baking soda crystals sparkle. Plaster dust does not. Maybe it was just about adding some sparkle to the snow?

Peteski, you get a cookie!
But yes that's exactly what I meant, I have seen it done in some photos in MRR and they turned out great, I have done it once my self I will try and dig up the photo.

Crappy, photo, but here is a HO Bmann FT(?) that I sprinkled Baking Soda on....

Maybe if you are lucky ill do it on some N scale loco and rolling stock... Just don't want to do it on my expensive stuff.... I don't model... The snow... I hate snow lol....

I don't know nothin' 'bout no plaster vs baking soda. All I do know is that Bill's photo, in the mag, looked awfully darn convincin'. An' I guess that's what matters most.

Isn't baking soda corrosive, whereas plaster powder is not?

Sparkle would work if under clear skies. Under overcast skies, which is how most snow scenes are depicted, I don't think it would matter.

Caustic soda - yes
baking soda - no.

It doesn't matter if its overcast or blue skies, I have seen snow shimmer in both conditions, even at night when the moon or just lights are on, it's a mesmerizing effect....

Anyways sorry to drag this off topic, it was just to put a thought in your head/s... Think outside the box, or in the case of Baking Soda... In.

iridescent medium acrylic.

I like the plaster for getting the overall snow scene.
for making the snow... glitter?... like it does
you need interference or iridescent in the acrylic.

the plus is that you can clean it.

Um, baking soda is a powder just as easily cleaned up as plaster powder.  :|  I would say it is even easier to clean up than plaster powder.

I wonder if some Pearl-X powders from a craft store would also do the trick.

Cocaine was just too expensive and didn't "sparkle" quite the way Bill hoped.  You do get more modeling done though...

not clean it off as in remove it from the loco...
rather, clean it as in the scenery where you want it to stay....  and be clean.
