Jason, in a nutshell, the point of the article shows how to model short C&NW consists with mostly available "out-of-the-box" equipment. So matching the car types was important and not so much trying to track down historically correct unit numbers and 100% accurate consists. You're free to dig up that info and change the models to suit if you desire. I think you will be disappointed if you buy the magazine for my article.

Fantastic modeling and top-notch photography. Amazingly realistic.

What's the story on the coaling tower? Is it a 3-D model or a photoshopped image?

Loren,

Thanks, the coaling tower is a photoshopped image. I found a hi-res photo on the web, photoshopped it a bit, and attached it to some thick cardboard. It was a quick and dirty experiment. I think it is just OK photographically but really helps set the location and makes it easy to identify the train (Kate Shelley).

I disagree Bill, I think it looks great.  Great way to change up the photo module, with a quick change.  It immediately caught my eye.

Grant Eastman's article is a great read too.....actually the whole issue had me turning pages, and I don't buy N scale mags very often.

Bill, I'm sure the article is great and being a midwest modeler I'd find it very interesting.  My comment was all in jest as there's no doubt you're modeling is top notch, my apologies for saying anything.

I took the first comment as a jest but when you followed with another, I began to wonder since I don't know you personally. Was I not supposed to respond at all? It's hard not to get defensive about something I sunk so many hours into. In any case, perhaps we should just both get back to building some midwest models.  ;)

I think this is a much ado about nothing:  Jason made a statement and you questioned his source. Jason then provided a factual quote from the magazine which you then attributed to the magazine editor (not your fault).  Seems that Kirk might have been the one caused this misunderstanding. And he is not even here to offer an explanation.

To me this is a simple misjudgement on the part of the editor.  No harm done, nothing to see, move along...   :D

Pike sized passenger trains !! Very cool. I loved the old articles that Kalmbach used to do about this exact topic. I'm glad to see it revisited. Naturally I'm all for the Milwaukee stuff but any thought to some of the Rock Island little trains that were around in the late 60s like the Peoria Rocket ? Interesting topic and brilliant modeling by Mr. Denton !!

Thank You. I hope to do a "short" train article on the Milwaukee Road next!

Can't wait!

Cool! Can't wait to read it. (Even though I model Great Northern. With a little CB&Q, thrown in.)

I have lived on this earth for over 62 years but I don't know if I can go on knowing Bill may have used an image of an E7, the prototype of which was retired in in 1962, in a picture perhaps depicting a later date than that.

I just don't know if I can do it.

OK, how about we get back on track?

Here's how the snow scene was photographed. Not much to it. I used plaster for snow, some bare super trees and a crude hand painted backdrop ala Bob Ross.

Just imagine what he could do on two good legs...............

Once again a masterpiece Bill...... small passenger consists; an underappreciated and modelled opportunity.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!
