Thanks Mark, I'm leaning towards a base coat of paint for the muddy look, a top coat of stippled clear and then dry brush white for breaking waves. I'm still torn if I should use gloss or more of a satin? Muddy water never really looks very reflective.

Are there any rocks appearing above the surface anywhere?  If so, I have recently had good luck with gluing rocks down then flowing a very very thin mix of leveling concrete over a wetted surface.  This sinks the rocks in nicely so only their tops are visible over the "water" surface.  The leveling compound seems to set up no matter how dilute it is and it flows very well.

Then a colour which reflects the surrounding rock nicely.  I can't speak to gloss levels. I always use high gloss but I have never modeled anything like the Fraser and most of my viewing/photography angles are from low down where the reflection is nice to catch.

I have just had reliable results with it, and not so much with acetone...I always get a nice, shiny surface, my results with acetone have often been less predictable...sometimes chalky?...Just thought I'd share, what works for me may not for everyone!
Thanks. I'll have to give it a try. I have experienced the chalky  look too. Again, great work on the caboose!

That is a very interesting idea, I might try that on some scrap to see how it works.  I'm modelling the river at high (spring) flow so it is very deep and there are no exposed rocks, just the steep rock banks.  Thanks for the ideas.

This weekend we set up Free-moNebraska at the North Platte Train Show. We had another huge success with great operations on the triple loop wye.

The wye definitely stole the show this round.  Aside from one minor dispatching error...which the crowd actually loved the most!

No modeling for me, as I drove out to the ELHS Western Spring Meet in Marion OH for a day of railfanning and an evening of slide presentations.  I met some nice people and had a good time.  Here are the two extremes of motive power: I'll post more photos in the Thursday Proto Photo section this week.

At a grain elevator in Mansfield OH:

...and late in the day, a pleasant surprise:

And finally a graffiti shot - unfortunately I didn't see it in time to properly set up the shot.

@seusscaboose  time to cook!

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

I second Mark Dance's recommendation, but suggest substituting the concrete floor leveller with really soupy plaster. As it starts to thicken up it can be teased up into the 'large scale' standing waves and rapids. Then paint (including white in the rapids) then gloss medium for the smaller scale waves and ripples, then gloss white highlights for the surface foam. Practice first though...

As always, great stuff.

Doh !   I access TRW through a bookmark that takes me directly to the N scale forum.  Obviously, I forget about some of the other pages I should be looking at too !

The way other members post everything in the N/Z section, you are far from the only one having that "problem".   :)  Expand your horizon - visit other sections of TRW!  :D
