Atlas has a new 40' standard height container coming in June.

Jason

Jason,

I missed the announcement, and they look really good.  http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-1346-n209.aspx

I wonder if they have magnets for stacking?

Thanks, Carter

$30 MSRP for a pair of containers is pretty rough. Even with street prices approaching $10/container, you're looking at $100 to fill a 5-unit set of well cars. With Kato's MAXI-I, you get 10 containers and the stack cars (for free!). Seems like these would be a good money maker in volume at a lower price.

I really don't know what Atlas was thinking on these. Of all the containers out there, this is probably the most modeled. Deluxe, Kato, Arnold, Hobbytrain all have 40' standard height boxes. I would love to see some more 48' and 53' domestic containers.

They will have separate door hardware....  Might be a game changing detail, if it is not too heavy handed.

Most of the others don't seem to produce regularly, so I can't see an issue with redundancy in the market.

That was probably my first thought, but then again I think you can look no further than the Bethgon Coalporters to see why companies pick the ubiquitous cars over and over and over.   And with the containers, the one company that had a stranglehold on that market just couldn't deliver.

Best idea is don't buy two dozen of the Atlas boxes....just buy one each of what numbers they produce, then put the (presumably) nicer Atlas containers toward the front of your train. (you know, where all the pictures are taken.  8)  )

Fine N Scale makes a variety of containers including 53's, and flat tainers(?) http://www.finenscale.com/intermodal.html
American Limited Models also made a 20' tank tainer http://brooklynlocomotiveworks.com/al-bulktainer.htm

Died anyone know if the Tanktainers were ISO, or just domestic? I seen you recall that euro had similar liquid containers but did not conform.

The iso provides standards for tank containers... And ive seen pictures of ones similar to the deluxe / American models in other countries

Well, only the Kato model is a modern no-logo-panel design.  And it's not the greatest model; the top edge is too thick and the connector brackets (or whatever you call them) on the corners are incomplete because Kato misplaced the pins on their 53' containers.   So that Atlas is a good addition, but I agree it's too pricey,  and we really need 53' cans.

BTW, can you confirm that the Rolland Industrail 40 footers are high-cube?

I should add...
Very poor choice of paint schemes by Atlas, since both Maersk and Hanjin were done by Kato.

I agree about the paint schemes.  Good grief, how many Maersk containers do we need?

I reserve the hope that the separate door hardware will be a major boost for the detailing.  If they are too clunky, I figure I will etch something.  I've been thinking about it for some of the others and it is not too problematic, and will make detailing the doors much easier.

I have to agree with Dan on this one. This container mirrors the HO release as expected, but if they're trying to complement a freight car with a container load, what is it? The 89'er? Even in HO where they have a 53' well car (that we all say pretty-please for in N) it's an unusual choice for a container (granted they have different competition in HO). I'd like to understand this better than I do, but happy to have a state-of-the-art 40' standard height, fully-corrugated container in N. Note the variation in the doors on the undecs.

And yes to more 48'/53' cans in N.
