I love the opening - perfect!

I finally finished my three ATSF "close enough" cars..... (I know that there are Athearn bodies closer but these were "in stock" at Chateau Puddy)

When I worked in Richmond BC we received a steady diet of coated linerboard from a mill in Beaumont Tx. via ATSF cars. These cars didn't deadhead home; they went to a Lower Mainland mill and were loaded for an unknown corrugated plant south the the line, on their way back to the friendly rails of the Santa Fe.

I wanted a small brace of Santa Fe cars, representing a wide range of liveries to service my corrugated plant and then forward to the Domtar mill for loading and exchange south.....

Each are custom painted and decalled - weathering was applied to make them all look well loved and used... I think they will add some operating interest as they have to be received, unloaded, forwarded, loaded and then barged to the GN for final forwarding..... ;)
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I'll continue my habit of the past year (all three times I've posted to the Weekend Update anyhow) of posting stuff not train-related, as I continue to use my limited modeling time on 1/35 stuff.  I wrapped up this 1/35 D9 this past week.     For giggles I should whip out one of those 1/160th D7s that David made and do some similar treatment to it.  See how the techniques scale down to something  much, much, much smaller.  That entire D7 is less than the width of the side of the blade of this D9.

Super-cool Mark!  The paint/weathering is very realistic.  If you were to photograph it in a natural setting from a low angle, it could pass for the real thing.

Installed the double crossover in Clinton, IA that are between the west staging and the Mississippi River bridge. The double crossover uses four #10 turnouts and will allow access from all 11 staging tracks to both the #1 and #2 mainlines heading across the Mississippi River and eastward toward Chicago.

Here's an overall view of the west staging throat and the turn to head across the Mississippi River and eastward.  I'm not a fan of peninsulas and turn back curves, but there will be a scene divider so only half of the curve will be a part of the modelled layout.  Also, the unmodelled portion of the curve is 24" radius while the modelled portion is 36".

Finalized these 5 buildings for the small town. Been swapping out various buildings and a couple of them were painted twice because I didn't like the first colors   Spent about 8 hours today just detail painting them, feels like I barely did a thing.

Testing a wheel swap in advance of a detailing project; old on left, new on right. Difference is most visible underneath the equalizer, but most significant for me is the wheel is no longer visible above the truck frame.

The original Con-Cor/Kato U50 had 48" wheels vs. the prototype's 40", and Con-Cor carried this on through their subsequent production. I made half-axles out of NWSL wheels and brass tubing for the geared wheels, and had NWSL do custom wheelsets for the idler trucks. New wheel size is 42", as 40" would have had clearance problems.

The ride height is correct, BTW! On the prototype, the frame filled that gap, so it's on the detailing list.

Desert camouflage. The operators cab looks like it has armor plating and bullet proof glass. My guess would be a Combat Engineer Battalion.

I've actually managed to do some minor modelling myself this week. Way back when Wheels of Time announced the 85' arched roof baggage cars, I pre-ordered a pair, and they came in just after the New Year. So I'm looking at one yesterday and I'm thinking to myself; "they sure are pretty but somethings missing".

A couple spare RS Laser flatcar decks I had kicking around were trimmed to fit the inside of the car, and voila - wood flooring.

It's a US Marine Corps version.  They buy them off-the-shelf in Cat Yellow, install an 'armor package', and the paint over it in standard camo colors (which, to-date, have all been Tan).  I presume the lighting packs over the blade were added later, as they are most often still in standard Cat Yellow.

You should see the Israeli versions.  They put even beefier armor, wrap the thing in basically a wire mesh or rod 'cage' to protect against RPGs, and often even put a 50cal on top of the thing.
