Question re Atlas EV Caboose coupler conversion

Over the last few years I have accumulated a number of Atlas GT EV Cabooses at local flea markets.  I am now looking at changing the Rapido couplers to Microtrains.  In looking at the Microtrains conversion chart, it shows that you use an 1111 coupler.  (MT #001 30 007).  This is the conversion coupler for early Con Cor SW1500's.  I wanted to ask if anyone had done this conversion and whether or not I was reading the chart correctly.

That should be the coupler for the original MTL cabooses and also the one used in the original four-wheel and six-wheel MTL passenger trucks.

I still have my copy of the 1993 MTL Coupler Conversion Guide that has drawings of each of the coupler styles.  Any of these should work (old MTL stock numbers listed).  Find the least expensive one:  1102, 1103, 1104, 1105, 1107, 1108, 1109, 1110, 1111, 1112, 1113, 1114, 1115, 1118, 1124, 1128, 1133, 1134, 1135.  Item #1128 is the Universal T-Shank short-Length coupler.  That's the one you want if MTL still offers it, and that should be the least expensive of these items.  But any of these, including #1111, should work.

It's been a while, but I've done the EV caboose conversions with the 1111 couplers with great success. Yes, you're reading the chart correctly.


Hmm... on a side note,
the 1111 couplers are often
called the 4 aces couplers...

I was going to say...  This is one of the few (the only?) Atlas cars that was ever shipped with MT couplers.   My one EV caboose has the Magne-Matic logo on the insert.

When Atlas first released these two caboose models, it was before they phased out Rapido couplers in favor of the Accu-Mate couplers.  So they offered each scheme with Rapido couplers and Micro-Trains couplers.  The two models specifically were designed to accept one of the standard MTL couplers, in this case the #1111, so that people easily could covert their Rapido-equipped models when desired.

Any T-shank MT coupler (retrofitted into a Rapido coupler pocket) needs the adapter you are describing.  It holds the spring and keeps the split coupler shank pieces aligned.  But the adapters are included with the couplers.

OK.  On the few T-shank couplers I used, other than adapter kits, I didn't use the adapters.  They were all odd cars, and in some cases I made my own adapters, plus I last used one over 30 years ago!

I was one of those odd people that put 1025s on everything, whether they fit or not...  Back then I'd rather cut the box down than try to find a better fitting coupler, especially since our local shop didn't sell much else.

The original coupler pockets provided the luxury of the MTL 1111 being a drop-in replacement. With Atlas' migration to Accu-Mates, I'm assuming the coupler pocket was modified?  Which would mean the 1015 or 2001 knuckles should now just drop in.

I think you're right. The copy on the newest release says "Now with AccuMate® couplers"

I have an Atlas wide vision caboose that came with the old Rapido's in the "someday get to it" box ..  someday finally arrived  .. looking at my MTcoupler stash, I didn't have any 1111 couplers in stock ..so I mounted a 1015 box instead .. it requires some surgery but it can be made to fit into the same space available for the cost of a couple of 1015s ..

I thought there was something like that as a PDF at the MTL site. I printed it out a few years ago and keep it hanging on a hook in the basement.
