The V&O I know had the "V&O" inside of a shield logo. (Ok, I'm old)

I would also like to have at least one V&O boxcar from the 50s or 60s.  Again, the Fox Valley boxcars are simply to modern for my 1974 railroad.

The Crooked Mountain Lines was also mentioned.  I remember it for the overhead wires, which always seemed to me to be perfect for mass production in HO and N.  Robert Hegge wanted catenary, but rather than try to get the sag right in the messenger wire, he used two parallel wires.  That would be (relatively) easy to mass produce in rolls, using 0.008 to 0.010 phosphor bronze wire, and very easy to hang, as the pole spacing wouldn't matter.  It looked fine in O, and should look just as good in N, much better than the grossly oversized wire used by the European sectional catenary makers..

FVM also did 2 numbers for the AM on it's B&O wagontop box car.  I don't recall seeing any V&O versions. Nevermind, they did.  Also the Cumberland Valley.

I did, too.  Believe it or not, I found an AM one at a swap meet last month for $8 in nearly new condition. I snapped that sucker up.

Interesting statement. I've encountered exactly the opposite - freelanced or imagineered HO railroads seem to be everywhere, but I've seen freelanced N RRs mostly just here on TRW. I think it has everything to do with very few N scalers (other than here) who paint and letter, and the poor availability of undecorated models.

Funny, Mike, my perception has been that there are very few freelancers on TRW. I don't have any data to back that up, but it always seemed to me that the preponderance of layouts on display here are tied to real railroads (and actual locations). I could be wrong, though.

Like many of you, I have a soft spot for these classic layouts. As far as I'm concerned, the most creative piece MR ever did was for its 50th(?) anniversary issue. The set up was the editors discovered the magazine owned an old engine shed in northern Wisconsin. Two of 'em went up to check it out, and were gobsmacked to discover it contained a Hiawatha. They "renovated" it, and took it on a barn-storming tour of the nation's most famous railroads (layouts). A great photo story, and very creative way to pay tribute to some iconic layouts.

Jim,

That very article may be my favorite MR article, and I still cherish that 50th Anniversary (January 1984) issue.  In fact, I have replaced it at least once, because it became worn out and ragged.  I also have on more than one occasion had to fight the urge to pick up one of the Fox Valley Hiawatha 4-4-2 models.  That may have been thirty-one years ago, and I was only thirteen years old at the time I received my copy, but that particular issue of MR stands out to me to this day.

Too funny, Dave! My second copy of that issue is also in tatters. And it is also difficult for me to resist FVM's model, precisely because of that story. (Plus it's just a damn attractive engine.)

I also like the V&O and AM, and would probably buy a locative for each if it was more era appropriate for me, anything from an F-3 to a GP-38-2, but the -2 era is my cutoff. Anything after 1982 is no go for me.

I also missed the wagontops, probably because the B&O cars barely made it to my era, and were very rarely seen in the Northwest by then.  So, I ignored the model entirely!

Well there are HO decals available for both the AM and the V&O Appalachian Lines schemes at http://www.modernrails.com/decals-in-ho-and-n-scales.html   Maybe if if a bunch of us asked nicely, they'd do them in N.

I would love to have a transition-era V&O freight car on my 1950s roster. If the Wagontop wasn't such an iconic esoteric signature design for only the B&O, I would have bought one. I do have both a V&O and AM modern boxcar for my Conrail era roster.

I did some internet research and found out the V&O cars were cancelled and never released. I haven't found out why.  I guess Matt would know.  The AM and CV cars are out and still available here and there.  Somehow I got two of the AM 1190 cars and the CV 122134 car.

Pacific Western Rail System has all 4 cars, although at a non-discounted $19.95 each

Toy Train Heaven and N Scale Supply still have both AM cars, discounted.

BLW and M.B. Klein are out of all cars.

There may be others but that's what I found in about an hours worth of searching the other day.

It's also interesting to see what has sold out and what hasn't.  Using BLW as an example:

RD-4 Trinity coal hoppers:AM - Sold outV&O - In Stock
GE GEVO:AM - 3 #'s in stockV&O - Sold out
B&O Wagon Top:AM - Sold outV&O - Cancelled
PS 5344 Box:AM - 2 #'s in stockV&O - sold out

Given that the AM RD-4 hoppers sold out, you would think the GEVOs would as well.  And apparently people are pulling more than coal drags with their V&O GE's.

If my sieve of a mind remembers correctly. The cars were cancelled not because of sales, but because the V&O would have never had them according to the V&O Hysterical Society.

That's too bad.  Other than the Milwaukee Rib side cars, FVM doesn't have any other steam/transition era box cars yet.  Maybe we can talk Paul G. into a run using the PS-1?
