I Need Some Brass Strip Cut to Length...

I'm scratchbuilding some logging cars, and I decided to use 3/4" brass strip as the car weights. However, I'm not having much success cutting the strips the proper length. The brass moves slightly as I try to cut it with a razor saw and miter box.

Does anyone have the ability to smoothly and accurately cut this brass strip into the proper lengths? With the right tools, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

If so, how much would you charge to cut 16 pieces about 2-3/4" long? I'll include a sample I managed to cut that is the proper length.

If we can work something out, I'll mail you the strips and include a money order or personal check (your choice) to pay for the work plus return postage.


Hmm... I told Kiz to use
a sharp ax, but he won't

Do you have some tin snips? If so you should be able to score the top of the brass with the back of an Xacto knife and then snip right through unless its really thick.

Alas, no tin snips. I'm pretty much a non-tools guy, except for some assorted small tools for scratchbuilding in N scale - X-acto knives, taps and drills, some files, tweezers, jewelers screwdrivers and scale rulers. I have pretty much nothing that would ever come in handy, except a hammer and some large screwdrivers.

have you tried securing the strip in the miter box
double sided tape?
a small clamp?
or is it more a problem with the saw
do you have a dremel w/ cut off disks?

I have no double sided tape, nor a small clamp, nor a Dremel tool. I feel like I'm bankrupt...

After experimenting, I figured out a way to cut the brass strip. I'm almost finished.

Glad it worked out for you in the end. It's a bugger when you do not have the right tools on occasions.

**** Disclaimer ****** This is not from my personal experience, but from someone my ex-boss knew.

He knew someone who used the " Insert big box store " rental service.  The said person who needed a tool he didn't have, would purchase said tool, use it for the required job, then returned it as not what he needed, didn't do job he expected, etc.
