correct union pacific 4-8-2 build

After some more santa fe steam acquisitions and finished builds,  I have moved to getting my UP steam fleet built for the layout, well whenever I get a layout built lol

First on the list is what will be one of a couple UP 4-8-2 mountains. The mechanism is a Bachmann class J with the trailing truck shaved down to look like a delta trailing truck while retaining the factory mounting. I stole this idea from Jason smith. The Bachmann 4-8-2 drivers are undersized and the J is closer to the prototype.

The boiler is a kato mikado boiler with a piece of brass tubing spliced in between the factory kato smokebox and boiler. Ill add some boiler bands to render a longer smokebox and blend the brass tube into the rest of the boiler. So far the boiler profile seems to match very closely to the odd UP prototype. Also I'm using the factory mikado running boards and firebox that's been filed to match.

The cab is a shortened athearn challenger cab with some filing to match things up.

I'm still working on what size to make the domes. Ill post more this evening once I get to the hotel and set up my mobile work station. Overall I think this is coming along nicely.

Lookin good Adam!  Those Spectrum J's are becoming quite the popular choice for a mechanism!

Too bad they do not have see-through spoked drivers and the siderods have unique "J" look to them.  But there isn't much that can be done for either.   But the conversion work is outstanding!

Actually a lot can be done with the rods.

Yes, it depends how far you want to take it. Photo-etch your own? I suppose the original ones can be filed down a bit too.

LOL!  I didn't realize that many other locos had such chunky side rods.   The class J  siderods are prefect fit!

Not all of them recieved that style of rod though so it will be a somewhat specific model peteski.

Oh but Peteski, the rods are not chunky, they exude power :D
Besides, it's not the rods, but the roller bearings on all driving wheel pins, a sure sign of modern steam power. The 7002 got them in anticipation of streamlining ...
Nice going Jason, I'll be following this with interest as I have one of these under construction .... somewhere

Yeah I see,  it is the dumbell-like ends make the rods look chunky.  Come to think of it, I seem to recall that some Pennsy locos had similar looking rod ends (must have been the roller bearings).

Slowly but surely getting there now. I need to tweek the firebox a bit. Need to work on the domes and walkways now. I'm trying to decide if the boiler needs lowered slightly. Sorry for the crappy hotel room pictures off the phone lol [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
