Which would be preferable; an FA 1 or and FA2 ? The FA1 is about 4 feet shorter so they really don't "go together"... so to speak.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I'd rather have the FA-2 model. That extra space is for the steam generator so I can use it to pull my super fabulous Rapido passenger cars! (end shameless plug)

FA-2 for LIRR schemes. Would FA-1 and 2 work on one mechanism?

Mark 5, so the wheel base is longer on FA-2? Thought it was just rear overhang for steam gen. Did LL units have 2 different mechs?

FA-2 would be the wiser choice. It had a longer life span than the FA-1 and more paintschemes, plus secondary lines. But most importantly 4 numbers in Western Maryland (3 Black Speedscript, 1 RWB). See where I am going with this @Puddington ?

I remember the LL FA2s fondly. First engine I ever kitbashed, so lucky for me no evidence of the job remains. Still have some undecs somewhere in the basement.  Mine ran ok and pulled the paint off the walls when I got a powered ABBA lashup running. It would seem a decent upgrade candidate, if Those Who Shall Not Make More N Scale were not in possession of the molds.

 :)
the FPA-4 should have the same Wheel Base as the FA/FPA-2,so Mr Shron could
be some help on that item.
believe that Life Like did a short run of up-graded Split frame FA-2s around 2000.
there should have also been a short run of Split Frame BL2s around then also.
a lot of FA-2s were traded in earlier than FA-1s because they had the GT581 Genorator.
these were used in C420s,C424s and maybe the C415s.
the C420 could use the FA-1 Genorator, but the C-424 had problems with the smaller
   FA-1 Genorators.

I have 6 of these puppies, 3 A-units and 3 B-units (looking for another A, I had ordered an A-unit shell from LL for $5 about 10 minutes before they were bought out and no longer for sale). They're heavy and noisy but run as well as my Atlas locos. An ABA set will pull anything I couple to it.
