Get 'em while they're hot!  http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/N-Scale-Steam-Locomotives-s/1457.htm

Given the quantities, I suspect it's Klein's usual  small, early shipment since Bachman said at the trade shows they wouldn't be on shore until later this month.

Looks good but...it has the same stinking riveted rods, deep dish/smaller than it should be wheels. I ordered one, but my money is still on a nicely modified Wally-World Berk.

I picked my order up from Kleins. Got home, and within 15 mins threw a traction tire. And by threw I mean split. I have a bunch of spares for other locos, hopefully the Mikado fits.

The side rods are articulated between the 3rd and 4th axles and like brass, the crank/eccentric combo is held to the driver with a screw. Drivers 2 and 3 are geared, while the 3rd wheel set has traction tires. It's a very tight tolerance mechanism. Operation in the upper speed range is smooth however slow speed operation has a hitch (either flashing on gears or the split tire mucking the works). It Has a deep guttural growl during the hitch cycle. Others may or may not exhibit this habit.

Although I have my reservations on the scale side of the driver faces, they are see-through, which was a nice plus. The decorating is top notch. The shell details are great and road specific. I was surprised by the weight, it does have some heft.

The sound was clean and crisp with no reverb on functions or chuffs.

Hopefully I have a tire that fits, just a little bummed at 190 samoleans to have a problem with only test runs.

Thanks for the quick review. I don't need one of these, but it's hard not to want one.

I was able to tear down the crank/eccentric rods and throw on a spare traction tire from a Mikado with no problems. Surprised it was so easy. Threw it all back together and she's running again. Still has the low speed hitch, but that can be fixed later. At least she's running again.

Could the slow speed problem be the decoder? Like the speed scale or whatever.

Nah if anything they would compensate. I think the hitch on mine is in the drivetrain somewhere, it has a mean growl in the lower speeds at the hitch point.

oil the motor.
oil the motor
oilthemotor
oil the motor!

that growl is the motor bearings.
it will destroy the bearing quick if I am correct.

If the motor is the same as the one in the J...
i had a J that ran ok and it growled.
... bearings were destroyed by the time I found the problem.

oiling the motor won't hurt in either case.
I'll just be wrong about my assessment.
