New Walthers N scale power plant

I just noticed in the Feb sale flyer. I didn't read any mention of this before. Looks like a play off the old Superior Paper Kraft mill but it does look nice.  Walthers number 933-3837. Sure is nice to see some investment in N from Walthers.

Aside from its intended use, this thing could be cut up and repurposed for a lot of things. Nice to see Walthers trying in the n scale structure market!

I would think it'd be easy to re-work the HO version into an N scale plant. The windows are not standard, there's no obvious indication of floor story heights, and filling in the HO doorways with N scale ones shouldn't be hard.
At 13"x 10"x 13" (HO version) it would be appropriately massive for an N power plant.

Good for Walthers for finally taking the tooling from the paper mill and doing what they did with it in HO for us N scalers. No complaints at all here, and I hope it sells well enough that they consider becoming more active in N with more N versions of their extensive HO Cornerstone line. There are a number of attractive HO kits in that line that could really shine if offered in N scale.

Yes, it is a repurposed building. That's fine, the Paper mill ahs some generic structure components that are used in a lot of large industries.  The fofot print isn't too small but also not oversized so it should help sales.

You are right, but it will sell because it looks different. Most won't try and kitbash the New River Mine. Personally, I wish they would do the large modern Grain Bin in N. The RIX models can't be made big enough.

It's funny, but the modeling community probably models the mine end of the coal run 5x over the receiving end.  John Armstrong commented on that once, in an chapter in one of his books showing how to run unit trains in a loads in/empties out fashion.

I did that on my old layout, and used an HO power plant.  As mentioned earlier, it is easy to cover up doors with other N scale pre fab metal buildings to disguise the scale and in reality, the HO size plant is probably more in true scale, if you have the room. The smokestack always  looked big to me.  I also used portions of the N scale coal flood loader as a lift from loading bay to the plant area.

Not sure I have any pictures of it, but Wyatt or Doug may have kept some, but it was pretty cool.  Also did some coal piles, by cutting off funnels.  Looked a little too regular (the guys named the two piles "Dolly Parton" and maybe a plaster mound, painted black and covered with HO ballast might be more realistic.
