Coke loads? I'd recommend baking soda. Maybe marble dust.

I'd laugh, but somebody executed this same joke on me a Facebook group. Then @Bob Bufkin got in on what I thought was trolling when he recommended using liquid coke.
I jokingly asked if it also came in diet, but then found out that liquid coked coal is actually a thing.
Maybe that's what that sludge is in my pics.

Either way, the right answer for coke loads seems to be to use that fish filter charcoal stuff and dust it with exactly fifty shades of gray powders.

I'm learning that it is VERY easy to overdo things. I did some more rust'n wipes tonight and overdid it by making the lettering too dark. Luckily, it was easily fixed by painting on some alcohol and brushing off.
I'll post pics tomorrow since I drained my phone watching WWE NXT Takeover.

He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

So here's the pics. More oil washes. I laid it on thick, let it set, then wiped down to get those streaks.

Next steps:
Touch up trucks. Make the interior look less horrible. Use chalks to streak the letters. Shave off the pre-molded coke and replace with charcoal.
As always, constructive criticism is welcomed!

I heard someone suggest fish tank filter carbon. I wouldn't imagine them looking much different than coal cars.

That would be @Dave Vollmer, who discovered that this stuff:

Is made from bituminous coal. Interestingly, I also use this exact stuff, but for its intended purpose in my fish tanks.

Did he use this for coke or coal?
I have AR&M coal but it's shiny.

Coal, especially bituminous coals like thar found in Southern Wales, don't scale down all that well.
I have a nice big lump of genuine Welsh coal, and although in 1:1 scale it is dull and dusty, in 1:160 the little bits are shiny, and unless you do live-loads, you don't have the fine dust to tone down everything.

This is starting to look amazing... I love the effects created by removing paint with the alcohol.
It really turns weathering into a thoughtful process not the "spray/slather/dust" it was for years...

very inspiring :)

Looks really good, especially around the ribs.  Are you going to "distress" it a little as well?  Some bent ribs or bowing?

Looks great. Although, I'd prefer to see the use of a more prototypical canvas, such as the BLMA gons.

It's not my car  ;)
It's for @DeltaBravo. He was brave enough to let me practice on one of his cars.
Don't worry- I've got 5 more BLMA gons, and 4 of your gons.
I'm waiting to do those. I want to make them indistinguishable from the Soverign Mann series.

@Jesse6669, unlikely for this car as it was still in pretty good shape.

The Prairie Shadows gons also are impressive, and prototypically accurate.  Something to consider if you want to diversify your gon fleet.

I do need to diversify my fleet. Is this what you're referring to?

Was it a PRR car?
