Ok. Next, the washing of the burnt umber!


Another layer. I'll come back tomorrow when I have a bit more time to touch up some of the braces I missed.
When I applied the wash (with my flat wide brush) an unexpected yet, pleasurable phenomenon occurred: streaks under the rivets. Rusty streaked rivets are pretty prominent on the prototype. I can only think of using tooth picks or brass to dot on buts of oil paint.
How do youse guys do rivet details as such?

You know Josh, you had me fooled!  I believed you when you said that you were a weathering newbie. But you're not fooling me anymore - now I'm convinced that you have been weathering for years.

Come to think about it - I seem to recall that  :tommann: mentioned in his book that you were his mentor!  Now I see why!

But honestly, I feel like with using these techniques and materials, the car weathers itself. I'm learning that none of these things are hard, but knowing how to effectively utilize them in combination is what makes it great.
...unless trombone players are just naturals at weathering.

I learned from  @Ed Kapuscinski that @tom mann didn't even have a copy of his own book! Then he saw mine and was impressed with the print quality that he finally got one!
I got a long way to go before I'm even on stage with Tom and the rest of yinz guys in terms of knowledge and application.

Whatever you are doing Josh, just keep on doing it!

I can take apart and reassemble a brass articulated steam locomotive blindfolded, but I suck at weathering.  I guess we all have different natural talents.  ;)

So the loads were coke, right?
I heard someone suggest fish tank filter carbon. I wouldn't imagine them looking much different than coal cars.

The loads are "COKE" and I believe the were mostly sent to what was the Bethlehem steel mill in Baltimore.
