Atlas Lehigh Valley C628 #627 misprint

I just got my Lehigh Valley C628s from the latest run yesterday. When I unboxed them I discovered the nose print on #627 is wrong- they both have all safety stripes where the #627 should have the logo like later cornell red units had.

Here is a pic of the prototype

Here is the photo from the Atlas website- the #630 had this paint so I was never worried

So the question is now do I re-decal the nose or wait to see what atlas does?

Oh that wacky lehigh valley. A different paint scheme for each engine.  I don't have the time this moment to look but did that engine ever wear the scheme.  The LV was known for changing things up from engine to engine.

Every picture I have seen in books and online has the #627 with the logo on the nose.

There is a great page for modeling Lehigh Valley c628s, it lists the 630 had stripes but the 627 was repainted with the nose logo.

Match the paint and paint the whole nose. The seams between the nose and cab create a paint break and it helps if your match is a tad off. Microscale has the decals of course.

Instead of repainting the entire nose, couldn't you just use this technique (posted by Denver Road Doug)  https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152936814060041  to remove the top stripe?  It would then seem to be a simple matter to redo just the top stripe and logo with a decal.  What am I missing here?

Looks like the vertical placement of the two bottom stripes is different.  So the whole nose must be redone.

I agree with Scott though, as there may have been a time where the unit wore the conventional deco on the nose.

Mark, I actually just saw that same video the other day! I am going to use that technique to remove all the nose stripes and add the Microscale decals, won't be hard to do.

I was initially just hoping that my model got the wrong nose/ long hood piece. Valley had so many unique locomotives with one off paint schemes, that is part of the allure of why I model it. Oh well, still got them though and can check them off the list!

This thread reminds me that I need to post over in Weathering & Detailing, for the LV geeps I am currently working on.  Similar story there with different paint for each of them.

627 and 620 were the only units to wear this version of the TUSCAN scheme.  The photo you have posted is of the CORNELL RED scheme.  According to Lehigh Valley Railroad Diesel Paint Schemes (1925-1976) 627 was delivered in 1965 in the white scheme, painted in the tuscan scheme in 1972 and painted in the cornell scheme in 1975.  630 was also delivered in the white scheme, repainted in tuscan in 1972 and in cornell in 1975.

Frank, I look forward to seeing your work!

The first picture I posted is actually weathered Tuscan from 1974, not Cornell Red.

On the Modeling Lehigh Valley C628 page I posted earlier, footnote #2 says

"2. The Tuscan scheme on 630 was unique in that there was no black diamond logo on the nose, only white stripes.  The black diamond was added when 627 was repainted, and was carried over into the Cornell Red/Yellow Stripe scheme."

It does say that both were painted Tuscan in 2/72 and repainted in 2/75.

Also, in the May/June 1996 issue of Diesel Era, an article on all Lehigh Valley C628s states on page 17

"This scheme (Tuscan with lettering like that on the yellow jacket C420s) was first applied to C420 406 and C628 630. Not entirely
happy with the scheme, LV repainted the next unit, 627, in a modified stye to incorporate the LV diamond within the safety stripes. Following these three units, the road switched to a brighter shade of Cornell red, introduced on the EMD GP38s in December 1971, instead of Tuscan Red."

This picture from 1974 shows the difference between the Cornell Red unit behind it and The Tuscan in front

Here is another shot from 1972 showing both Cornell Red and Tuscan C628s

There are two historical narratives here.  The RRPictureArchives photos are not definitive because the unit is heavily weathered and easily could be dirty Cornell Red.  An unweathered photo of LV 627 painted Tuscan with the diamond nose herald is needed to show the Atlas version isn't accurate.

But if the unit we are looking at is a weathered red, are all the dates wrong? There are plenty of other pictures on the net, and it wasn't repainted red until 1975.

Even better would be a picture of the 627 with only nose stripes.
