Kato UP FEF-3 "Greyhound" #844

Just finished painting and decaling my extra Kato FEF-3 #844 in "Greyhound" colors, also numbered 844.
First was to take it apart.
Primered all parts with SEM Self-Etching primer.
After hours of masking, airbrushing, decaling and other detail work yesterday here she is with sister the black FEF-3 #844.

Thanks Jason.
With blackened drivers.

Excellent job!  Of course you realize that Kato will now release that version of the model, right?   ;)  If the white tires are incorrect, they are just painted over the metal rim - you might be able to remove it with some lacquer thinner.

I had thought of that Jason, but in one of my books it shows a couple pics of a FEF Greyhound w/the white sidewalls.
Just thought the white sidewalls looked good.
Did they remove them in later years or just ran them for a little while ?

That looks awesome Ernie!  Every bit as good as my later series Key greyhound 8444.  Nice work!

as beautiful as I could hope and I like the white walls.

I am curious. I can imagine it is easy to mask the sand domes...
why did you paint the cab roof grey  when it is already black?

:-D

I'm with you Victor, I also thought the white walls looked good, but I had to obey the UP master Jason, epically when he called me to refresh my memory  ---------------------------   ;)
Actually I should have known as all my Greyhound Challengers and my cast resin FEF-3 Greyhound I painted that Jason cast has blackened drivers, just never clicked.

Reason I also primed and painted the top was so all black would match since there's different shades of black.
I've always painted steamers that way as well as diesels, just like to use my own paints.
Its a lot easier masking off the engine to paint the domes, at least for me.

Thanks everybody for nice comments.

Well Jason, at least now your happy, maybe not as happy as getting my Key brass SP Daylight GS-3, but close -------------------------  :D

If i were ever to abandon my PRR allegiance for the UP (not gonna happen Superturbine!) , this paint scheme would be the reason why. Absolutely LOVE it. Really nice paint conversion UP4-8-8-4!
