Thank you for joining The Railwire & sharing your How-To. I've used your method of twisting florist wire around a stem to create n-scale tree armatures with great success. As per your process I followed up with bark texture added by sprinkling sieved sawdust on top of thinned glue that was brushed onto the armatures. One question I've seen asked before on other forums but not really answered is where in the US can we source  “Wooly” or “Decotwister” ?

I know it is very very hard to find these kind of fibers on the USA...
Actualy I still do not know were and/or who sells  "Wooly"fibres overthere....
May be, specialy in N scale you can use the green aquarimfilterfibres. They are a litlle bit "coarser" than the lightblue/green fibres!
Important is that  you have to cut these fibers in small parts/pieces before aplaying/adding on the branches!
One big bag is enough to make hundreds of trees in N scale!

Jos, your methods are excellent.  I discovered your work on another forum, I think it was German and tried some of these techniques to make n scale Douglas Fir, where the branches are more rigid and don't droop down like some of the European species.  I can say that the results are excellent.  I did not build up the trunk as it would be hidden, and I replaced the static grass with ground up floral moss.

 


I have since made about 70 of these trees and will make many more, including some with detailed trunks.  They take about 15-20 minutes each, but I think they are worth it.

Hello Scottl,

They look very efficient! I mean : when placed close together they look great. Important is the overall effect of the trees!
As a "needle"counter I like the top of the trees= you can't see the wires which the treesframes are made of!
try to end always with another picture  of a tree...

Fantastic work; I really enjoy your tutorial and I look forward to trying this out to populate the module I am currently building with trees.

Using static grass for the finer branches and leaves really makes great use of this valuable scenic material.
