Anyone try running these together in DC?  How well do they run together?

I have not tried that but the FEF runs fast like other Kato's do. The only problem might be the traction tire as if there is wheel slip or push it will through the tire.

Isn't an E9 an EMD passenger diesel from the 50s?

E9  (I don't think Kato made these in N scale - they made E8s).

E9  (I don't think Kato made these in N scale - they made E8s).

But the cases are all marked E8/9

The "Second Diesel Spotter's Guide" says the only difference between E8s and E9s is the headlight casing.   E9s had rubber gaskets and recessed glass, E9s steel gaskets and flush glass, but they also note that "some E8s received steel gaskets", so would look exactly like E9s.

Kato probably felt that no one would be able to see the difference in N scale.

How about absence/presence of the portholes?

EDIT: Nevermind - I found bunch of E9s with portholes.  And that was E7 which was the one not made by Kato.

E7s have square/rectangular windows instead of round ones. And some have small numberboards.

I remember a move from California to Oregon. It was 1969,I think. My dad was driving a truck with our household belongings, and us kids were with Mom in the De Soto. Anyway, at one point we were cruising along, when a UP passenger train flew by; at the head end were several long diesels which I now know were either E8's or 9's. Mom stomped on the gas and finally we were able to catch up to and pace the units. I can still remember the roar from the engines at that speed, and being fascinated watching the journals move up and down.

Heady stuff for us kids...I think my Mom enjoyed it too!

Pardon the thread drift...

I'll let you know about the doubleheading when mine arrives...I have plenty of Kato E8/9 mechanisms (I have yet to acquire a UP 4 unit set, although that will occur in the near future.)
I plan to purchase another FEF (when Kato releases a 'plain' version) to do just that-provide helper service to one of the UP streamliners in my 1957-era.

as stated above, the differences in outward appearance between most E8 and E9s were almost negligible....single-double headlights (E9s sported both), headlight sealing, filler hatch shape...the Amtrak unit shown above is the only E9 unit I've seen that didn't have portholes...pretty sure it wasn't built that way-E9s had the same porthole config as the E8s.

I'd love to see photos of FEFs in helper service with UP Streamliners

If I remember correctly, the sand filler cover changed from round to rectangular, which can help distinguish an E9 from earlier E units.  As for the portholes, I believe that most, if not all, that are "missing" were modifications done by the railroads, not EMD.  The Amtrak E9 pictured upthread is a perfect example.  It's on at least its second owner, and the modifications to that unit appear to include, at a minimum, pilot/plow, portholes, horn, lower headlight, and skirt removal.

Wow, I can see at least four prime movers fired up in this shot.  The sight of them running is one thing, but that must have also sounded amazing.
