Might just do that... I need to get some work done so the hobby budget can recover first!

Many years ago I built that station from scratch out of cardboard.  Used xeroxed window sheets and some stripwood to tease out the details.  It looked remarkably good, but alas, cardboard doesn't stand the test of time, and it is long gone.

Nothing railroad related this weekend.  More heavy construction for the basement to allow the railroad work to continue later.  In relation to the drop ceiling, we needed to find a way to get around the panel box that will neat and tidy.  Ken suggested boxing out the area, so that's what I did today after a trip to Lowes for more materials.  Got there at right time, $5 sheets of drywall, I should have grabbed 2 cause I'll need more for the bulkhead as we turn the corner.  I've since filled the missing pieces and got first coat of mud on the joints.

This kind of basement work is always railroaded-related in a way . Think of it as ROW prep! When you're done with all this it's going to be quite the transformation of the space.

Code requires you keep minimum 36" clear in front of the panel.  Looks like you have it, and having that closet will help keep stuff from piling up in front of it.  Now all you have to do is keep stuff from piling up in front of it!

The right side of door frame is right at 36".  Right wall is 42" away from panel.  I didn't realize my angle would make it that close

More "heavy" construction this weekend.  2nd bulkhead near completion.  Now I can install the upper level backdrop and continue with drop ceiling grid installation.



Need to start tackling helix design and construction.  Layout needs to be operational by Sept 21-22 for Mainline Hobby Supply open house tours.  It will be hear before we know it.

More ceiling work.  Once I get some vertical grid installed, I can finish up remaining tile work.  Once complete, project will be at 75% stage with just the last section needing done.  That will go to the back burner though as after I finish the tile work, focus will return to beginning the helix construction and laying track on the upper level.  Goal is to have operation by Sept 20, but if helix isn't finished, I'll run temporary loops on top and bottom for the open house.

Back to focusing on the railroad for a while, well after I paint the bulkhead and panel room walls

Helix work started today.  Went for the octagon look.  8 segments per loop, 19 and 21" radius.  According to handy dandy helix calculator, it says 7 loops at a 2.08% grade.  Wish me luck.

Was that grade computed out for the 19" radius I hope at 2.08%?

That was using the 21, at 19 it comes up with 2.27%

Yeah I was just wondering if you had realized that if you based it on the 21 that the 19 was going to be steeper.
Some people wouldn't realize this and think that they both would be the same.
This was something I learned several years ago.

I'm on night work this week as our warehouse guy enjoys a week of wild hog hunting in South Carolina.  So this week I plan on getting some track laid on the upper deck.  At least that's the plan as long as I adjust to a slightly different sleep pattern.  Last night and this morning, I was able to transfer the track plan from my cardboard sketch directly to the foam.

On one side, from front to back you'll have the Elm St crossing where a long passing/storage siding begins.  On the angle will be Utz Quality Foods where they receive tankers of frying oil for their delicious chips.  All the way at the end will be the lead for Bittinger, home of the Vulcan Quarry that the rock runner runs from.  This will be a hassle as the mine is on the other side of the wall, but the lead is on this side.  Will need powered turnouts for this, or communicate with the Hagerstown yard job to open/close the turnout.


And on the Gettysburg side, you'll find the other end of the quarry lead.  Followed by a siding for Morton Buildings, Dal-Tile and Ag Com.
