If it were me, I would probably build a wall out of 2"x4"s running from floor to ceiling to support both decks and their respective backdrops.  I'd use 2"x4"s solely because it would be easier to hit the 1-1/2" width of a 2"x4" with screws than it would to hit the 3/4" thickness of a 1"x4" when screwing into the supports, not to mention that if you use shelf brackets to support either deck, you'll need more thickness than a 1"x4".  I doubt you need anything more than the strength of a 1"x4", depending on how far apart the "studs" are, but you can't go wrong with a little more ease of construction.  Besides, depending on how you planned to use the 1"x4"s, you might want to think about that upper deck flexing or shaking if someone were to lean on it or bump it.

Hope this helps,
DFF

I wasn't really thinking about a full on wall but more quick thoughts on that would allow me to run additional electrical outlets for power to UP5 panels and other items that may need plugged in.  Will have to think further about this.  But in doing so, I think I'm going to have to pull the entire center section out and rebuild it from scratch.  I've thought about adding at least 1 more A/D track to the yard, so this might be the push to do that.  And in doing so I might move Spring Grove over a little bit as well to keep the aisle width (putting a 2x4 wall up will eat into the aisle :D ).   Hell, I might as well redo the whole thing :D

2x4s are also much cheaper than 1x.  Unless you're getting cheap firring strips, in which case you wouldn't want to do much heavy framing with that junk.

Adam,

You know I've never seen your layout in person, so I'm spitballin' here.  But, instead of ripping it out, how about building the wall in the peninsula that's there?  You could go with 2"x3" or maybe 2"x2", if aisle space is at a minimum.  Just space 'em closer, if necessary.

I'm currently in discussions with my engineering team to conduct a feasibility study for the next course of action.  We are pretty damn good at feasing things, so give us some time to hash things out and will report back with the findings.

And then Hagerstown was gone !  This is what happens when I'm left alone too long to dwell on my thoughts.  Add some stress from work related issues and boom...

Productive day in the basement today.  Got everything moved out of the way (damn, even though it's my basement, a lot of stuff accumulated over here) and made enough space to get my center wall up.  I need 2-3 more 2x4  to fill in the center angled section but we're ready to go with new benchwork after cleaning up some more stuff and relocating it.

I ended up feasing things myself as my feasibility team never said anything about coming over.  I didn't think I actually had to invite them.  I mean, I said I'm working in the basement Sunday and it involves trains, I figured they'd be waiting for me to open the garage door.  Oh well....

Looks like you just tipped the layout room on its side and kept what didn't fall out the door.

I wish it were that easy.

And damn it, I didn't check the upload orientation

Edit:  And now I flipped it and now picture looks like a panorama and I used 4x10s for the walls  :D

Some lower level benchwork started this weekend.  I put up the old yard foam to see what I have so far.  Think it will work out great, and if needed I can still go a couple more inches deeper.  As it stands now, I think it is about 3" wider than before, and the angle will be different as well.

Are your nearest 2x4’s plumb with the floor? They look like they are square with the sloping drain line on the back wall. Hopefully that’s just an optical illusion.

Too bad you tore up all the track in the yard.. looks like with a couple of strategic swipes of the Dremel you could have just cut it in half and reinstalled it to the new length...  That's how my yard ended up in Ed's house... twice!

I thought about doing that but I would like to add at least another A/D track and I couldn't figure out where to make the cuts.  All track was salvaged so not all is lost.

Oh, there is. A blank canvas and a snow day!

Can't wait to see what Adam gets done today.
