If it were me, I would probably build a wall out of 2"x4"s running from floor to ceiling to support both decks and their respective backdrops. I'd use 2"x4"s solely because it would be easier to hit the 1-1/2" width of a 2"x4" with screws than it would to hit the 3/4" thickness of a 1"x4" when screwing into the supports, not to mention that if you use shelf brackets to support either deck, you'll need more thickness than a 1"x4". I doubt you need anything more than the strength of a 1"x4", depending on how far apart the "studs" are, but you can't go wrong with a little more ease of construction. Besides, depending on how you planned to use the 1"x4"s, you might want to think about that upper deck flexing or shaking if someone were to lean on it or bump it.Hope this helps,DFF
2x4s are also much cheaper than 1x. Unless you're getting cheap firring strips, in which case you wouldn't want to do much heavy framing with that junk.Lee
I wasn't really thinking about a full on wall but more quick thoughts on that would allow me to run additional electrical outlets for power to UP5 panels and other items that may need plugged in. Will have to think further about this. But in doing so, I think I'm going to have to pull the entire center section out and rebuild it from scratch. I've thought about adding at least 1 more A/D track to the yard, so this might be the push to do that. And in doing so I might move Spring Grove over a little bit as well to keep the aisle width (putting a 2x4 wall up will eat into the aisle ). Hell, I might as well redo the whole thing
Adam,You know I've never seen your layout in person, so I'm spitballin' here. But, instead of ripping it out, how about building the wall in the peninsula that's there? You could go with 2"x3" or maybe 2"x2", if aisle space is at a minimum. Just space 'em closer, if necessary.DFF
Productive day in the basement today. Got everything moved out of the way (damn, even though it's my basement, a lot of stuff accumulated over here) and made enough space to get my center wall up. I need 2-3 more 2x4 to fill in the center angled section but we're ready to go with new benchwork after cleaning up some more stuff and relocating it.I ended up feasing things myself as my feasibility team never said anything about coming over. I didn't think I actually had to invite them. I mean, I said I'm working in the basement Sunday and it involves trains, I figured they'd be waiting for me to open the garage door. Oh well....
Looks like you just tipped the layout room on its side and kept what didn't fall out the door.
Some lower level benchwork started this weekend. I put up the old yard foam to see what I have so far. Think it will work out great, and if needed I can still go a couple more inches deeper. As it stands now, I think it is about 3" wider than before, and the angle will be different as well.
And there is nothing like a blank canvas... excited to see this come back together!
