Jeez, I need to start paying more attention.   I assumed that the Kato would do what I needed it to do, which is allow me to convert it to a Cabbage with little fanfare.   Now I need to go look at Phase to see if that was an incorrect assumption.

So, for me I would definitely buy it if they could pull of some Cabbage tooling as well.

I also need an F40PH in Phase IV paint, but not sure which Phase it is either.

Yeah, it's not the right phase for a cabbage.  I'm going foobie on mine.  I'm just not that worried about it, and most people (including myself) won't know.  Heck, I didn't notice until I cut the holes for the overhead doors!

I may bite for a Rapido Amtrak F40PH... they came into Toronto daily on two different trains in the 1980's.

But an F40PH for GO Transit or an F40PH-2 for VIA would be better (to me).

Found this interesting, http://www.rapidotrains.com/f40amt_class.html

Gave some spotting features between the different phases of the F40s.

I also need an F40PH in Phase IV paint, but not sure which Phase it is either.
Look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amtrak_paint_schemes
Were those ever painted in that scheme?

F40s were painted in the Phase IV (large blue stripe with two smaller red stripes above it).  Believe by that time many of them were turned into Cabbages though.

This is a good reference: http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/locoshots.html

The link above to the Rapido master class is precise for figuring out the phase of an F40 PH.

But here is a quick and easy way.

Air tanks up front- phase 1 for sure.

Fuel tank up front, flat radiator fans- phase 2

Fuel tank up front, round sunken Q fans- phase 3.

So in that photo above, looks like a phase 3 which Kato could do if they wanted.  That paint scheme looks good on it.

What link to Rapido Ron?  I went to the Trainweb link but none of the F40PH photos identify their phases.

This is the loco with angular fuel tank. Is it simply an oddity rather than some specific phase spotting feature?

Hey Pete.

This is the link that Irek found and posted about 4 posts up.
http://www.rapidotrains.com/f40amt_class.html

I don't know what the deal is on those tanks.  I've seen them before.  They look like GE tanks.

Regardless of the oddity of the squarish tanks, #315 in your photo has the air tanks in the back, so (very quickly with no other info) this is either a phase 2 or 3.   Other photos might show the fans up top.

You can also "cheat" and figure out the phase of an Amtrak F40PH by its road number:

Phase I (Nos. 200-229) featured 1500-gallon fuel tanks mounted just in front of the rear truck.

Phase II (Nos. 230-328) had larger (1800 gallons) fuel tanks mounted just behind the front truck.

Phase III (Nos. 329-400) were similar to Phase II F40PHs, but had EMD's Q-style (quiet) radiator fans.

Hope this helps,
DFF

P.S. I've never seen those angular fuel tanks on an F40PH before.  They must be a replacement for some reason.

Instead of talking about phase in abstract, here are some photos.

Model Power (crap)
Phase 1-  fuel tank in the rear.

Life Like better, but not up to modern standards
Phase 1-  fuel tank in rear, air tanks in front.

Kato
Phase 3-  fuel tank in back front (sorry) , Q fans recessed in roof.

PFM brass
Phase 2- Fuel tank up front, air tanks in back (on other side), flat fans on flat roof.

Yep... In fact, your chart shows which manufacturer has the "wrong" road number.

Somehow I'm not surprised.

So, my 315 is an oddity after all. And all this time I thought the fuel tank shape would have been a good indicator of a certain phase.  And I made a model of it.  BTW, I took the photo of that 315 in the 80s, in Boston.

In fact, some of Amtrak’s F40PHs were occasionally leased by freight railroads when they were short on power.

Has anybody ever seen a picture of an F40PH pulling freight? Can you please post a link to such a picture?

It has been a long time ago, but I remember seeing a shot of an F40PH that....... if I remember correctly,....... was having its nose chopped and a front walkway platform created in that spot.

But I would have no idea where to find a shot like that now.

Iowa Northern has one or two.  I got some shots a couple years ago.
