I don't remember seeing many summer shots with plows...

Hey, Dave, I think you mean the Copper Country  :D.  I went to school in Houghton and you're absolutely correct about the snow.

Doug

I didn't…..

Were you at Michigan Tech? I was there 1989-97 for grad school.

Best wishes, Dave

SP did have snow plows that could be bolted on to some steam locomotives. Other locos actually had them built in. If you look at the Intermountain cab forwards, they have a small plow built in on the pilot.

As with diesels, the small plows weren't used only for snow.  They were good at removing almost anything on the tracks, reducing the risk of a derailment.  Much better than the standard boiler tube pilots, although maybe not as attractive.

Scroll down on this page and you will see one: http://wpyr.com/history/wpyr-facts/

It's on the White Pass and Yukon Route, and it is a photo from 1900.

Most of the time the pilots were fitted with big plows during the winter and they were taken off in warmer weather, usually stored around the enginehouse. I've seen photos of the same locos in and out of the snow, with and without their plows. I'm sure there were exceptions where the plows stayed on year round.

The plows soldiered on even after the steam was gone.  I have seen pics of WP F units with former steam plows attached.

Check out Western Maryland's steam. They had an interesting pilot that was designed to clear small rock slides and light snow.

Not uncommon on Canadian Pacific 2-8-2's or 2-10-4 Selkirks that headed up the "Trans Canada Limited" or "Dominion" while in the Rocky's....
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Those Western Maryland plows look more like weed cutters than snow plows... LOL.  But the WM definitely had some beautiful steam locomotives and I appreciate a reason to be reminded of that!!!

Thanks, my friend, for mentioning these steamers... found only one good shot of a Selkirk with a snow plow... definitely a difference compared to the streamlined plow normally used...

Found a second one which shows the detail just a little better...

Hey... if I have not learned anything else its how its used and not the size that matters.

I thought that someone had posted a shot of a model they had done with a plow a couple weeks ago (possibly Weekend Update).  The detail was really great but I somehow lost the shot on my computer and can' find the pic any more.  I know that Miniatures by Eric have some really great plows, which would likely be the route I would go with but wish that I could find the shot I had seen... which was really well detailed overall.

We model in N scale and you want to get into an argument over how size matters...

Sometimes it looks like they just used the whole front of the loco as a plow w/o any attachment. There's a picture of a NH steamer on p. 41 of "The New Haven Railroad" by Lynch and the entire front is covered with packed snow, with more snow all along the boiler and jammed up against the front cab windows. Don't see a plow on it.
