N Scale PGE-BCR Modellers at Trains 2014

Here in Vancouver, B.C. we have just enjoyed our annual model railway show titled Trains 2014.  The show comprises a two day public show with layouts and vendors, clinics, layout tours and a banquet.  It is also the annual meet of the 7th Division PNR NMRA.  Our N Scale PGE-BCR Modellers Group is a loose association of eight or nine people each modelling a different era and subdivision of the PGE-BCR in N Scale.  Our members are scattered around the Pacific Northwest but we get together two or three times a year to display our models and layout display boards at shows.  THis year was special as all of our members were present.  The following photographs illustrate our activities during the weekend, and include the work of numerous Railwire members and visits to no fewer than four Railwire layouts.

Our weekend began with our annual dinner at Boston Pizza and a visit to Railwire member Greg Kennelly's layout depicting the PGE Squamish Subdivision in 1952:

Our display at the show ran across four tables, with nine members' models on display, a series of display boards illustrating our home layouts, and an operating Kato Unitrack layout surrounding it all:

PGE steam locomotive and train by Railwire member Greg Kennelly:

PGE rolling stock by Railwire lurker David Morgan:

BCR rolling stock by another Railwire lurker Nolan Stewart, with a PGE freight train in front by David Morgan:

PGE-BCR-BCR Rail locomotives and rolling stock by yet another Railwire lurker Mike Mohr:

Freight cars by Chris Dittmar, M-420B & GF6C locomotives by Doug Davies (both Railwire members) with my BCR train in front:

BC Rail locomotives and rolling stock by Railwire member Chris Dittmar, with my BCR train in font:

Some of my BCR locomotives and work equipment (the rear consist is my Prince George Auxiliary as it currently exists):

BC Rail SD40-2 locomotives by Railwire member Andy Thomas:

After the Saturday show, our group visited Railwire member Gary Hinshaw's Tehachapi B.C. layout:

Our group was granted permission to run a passenger special comprising my ALCO C-425s 812 & 804, David Morgan's troop sleeper baggage car and Fox Valley day coach, my school coach BCOL 8, Jim Irwin's Royal Hudson coach, and Greg Kennelly's business car NORTHERN SUMMIT.  The train is seen here negotiating the climb on Gary's layout:

Gary saw this as yet another opportunity to see how many people could fit in his layout room!

Then it was off to Olympia Pizza for a wonderful dinner:

After dinner we visited Mark Dance's Columbia & Western layout:

Our passenger special also ran on Mark's layout:

After the Sunday show our group enjoyed another fabulous dinner at the Cheshire Cheese Inn and then visited my layout depicting the BCR Dawson Creek Subdivision in 1977, where several members were keen to see and hear the LokSound-equipped GP-9:

And here are all nine member sof our N Scale group together in front of our display:

It is a privilege to have such a great group of friends all modelling the same railway.  I hope you enjoy seeing their work.

That is an awesome collection of fine N scale work on display there guys.  Thank you for posting this Tim.

It was a privilege to have such a talented group stop by to visit TBC.  Hopefully we can do it again next year when I have more to show.

And what we probably can't see are 2-3 dogs who may have been trying to steal peanuts off the goodie table! :) Or were Banjo and Co. relegated to the house for the visit Gary?

Great looking models and layouts everyone.  I have to get out there again one day.  Hopefully with a box of models for the table .

:D  Mostly relegated to the house, but they did sneak out once or twice!  Banjo does fine, but Griffin, our 75 lb. Weimaraner with little body awareness, is a bit more problematic.  Then there is Pelli, our crazy beagle...

Looks like you guys put together another fantastic set up at Trains. Always a highlight. Congratulations. Those of us in the other SIGS have a long long way to go to catch up.

Cheers,

Andrew Hutchinson

Does Doug Davies run his electrics under wire, live or not?

Nope, just track pick up.  Live catenary is way above my pay grade :)

I've always found that modelers from north of the USA border to be particularly good at what they do; this group certainly proves that point...

Nice post.

Doug, are the GF6C's the shells available on Shapeways?  And what did you use to power them?  I've been staring at my shells for months trying to figure out how to fit a chassis under there.

Doug:  Live catenary is above mine, too, but I have installed single-wire overhead just to give the pans something to touch.  It isn't powered, but the MILW interchange looks better with the clutter.

Well, if you did put some voltage on that wire you would likely have fewer pans doing the touching  :D.  I do plan to put some faux catenary along the tracks these units will run on for effect.
