I don't search for the Micro Ace Lokies often but I have thought they are like hen's teeth.

I gave up on finding a Micro Ace 0-6-6-0 a LONG time ago, when they do show up, they go for stupid prices.

So, after looking though a ton of pictures and prototypes, I'm going to use this style locomotive as a refrence, and scale things up to fit the mech.
http://loggingmallets.railfan.net/list/wt112/weyer112.htm

I'm shooting for as it would have been in 1949 @ Vail.

This is a split saddle, but to make extra room for the motor, I'm going to build it as a solid saddle tanker. I'm also planning on dropping the boiler down as low to the drivers as I can, to try to keep the "small" look, and try to hide the way too big drivers. It appears that the smoke box is about 52" which would make the boiler diameter over the jacketing to be about 54"-56." I'm going to have to take a lot of libertys, but I think I can pull it off. I may also do the "tender" it's pulling to add some pickup, given that I want to do a traction tire of some type on it. Once I find a new source for brass stock, I'll start mocking stuff up.

If all else fails, NP 3100 has 55" drivers, and ended life as a logger, although not a tank engine.....

for the moment, I am trying to get a sound chuff installed on my old W3 project, then FINALLY get it decaled and sealed.

Did a quick search looking for drawings on these.   Here's what I found:

Rayonier (ex-Sierra RR) #38 Details

by Gary Caviglia

from Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette May 1999  p. 30

2-6-6-2  drawing  prototype  RLCX  Sierra  steam

Logging Mallets, part 4

Rayonnier, Inc., Baldwin Mallet 2-6-6-2T

by Schmelzer, Kenneth

from Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette May 1976  p. 42

2-6-6-2t  baldwin  drawing  narrowgauge  prototype  RLCX  steam

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weyerhaeuser Timber Co.

A reprint from Baldwin Locomotives magazine of 1935

by Glen Comstock

from Timber Times October 2001  p. 16

2-6-6-2  2-6-6-2t  2-8-2  2-8-8-2  logging  prototype  steam  weyerhaeuser

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scratchbuilding Weyerhaeuser No.111

If you can't buy it, build it in brass

by Frank Telewski

from Timber Times October 1997  p. 32

logging  scratchbuild  steam
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was a whole series of narrow gauge and shortline gazettes on 2-6-6-2's but its hard to determine if they ever published drawings of 12.

You can take a trip to the Black Hills and measure one.  :)

Here's a twist.   The ex-Arcata & Mad River one that ended up on Southwest Forest Products in Flagstaff (and is the one on display today) had both split side tanks AND a second water tender that was really nothing more than a tank car without a dome.   Definitely a good pickup car.

The two mallets in Arizona had an amazing collection of side tanks and tenders and it's hard to believe it was really only two locomotives.

PM me with an email and I'll scan some of the photos if you're interested.

Hey Randy! I would appreciate some photos, given this project is a fictitious locomotive, the more resources I get, the better. PM sent!

okay so I've had some time to do a little work on this thing. I milled down the frame to where I can put a smaller boiler on the front portion. I had to make the saddle tank quite a bit bigger than planned. So this is really going to be a fictitious locomotive now. I'm hoping to still keep it kind of small in appearance, but unless I want to mill the entire frame smaller, I have the bigger tank to fit the mechanism. there isn't really much meat to mill on around the motor. Overall I'm pretty happy with how the proportions look. Long ways to go still.

Hey look a few crappy cell phone pictures!

Another picture.

So, as of now, I used a cab from a Bachman Condi, and added the rear of the cab and bunker. Like i was saying, this is like some of my other builds, a Capture the "feel" locomotive, and I think this cab, roughed out like it is, does that. Remember this is a "Heavy" 2-6-6-2T. The stack is my own making, I turned it myself using my dremel, files, and brass tube, then soldered to the boiler. I did the walkways on the front with brass plate. the smokebox door is cut from the bachman 0-6-0 boiler, it still needs a lot of work. The locomotive has a long ways to go, but I'm still pretty happy with it as of now.

Next on the list is isolation, I already have the decoder installed, but the brass shell is shorting everything out right now. I also need to reinforce the coupler mount on the back, and figure out a way to attach the boiler to the frame. A long ways to go, but I'm pretty happy with it thus far.

Looking good Mike!
Only thing which makes me go "hmmmmm" is the extremely extended rear coupler. If this loco runs on logging railroads then it will encounter sharp grades.  If the loco starts climbing a steep grade won't the coupler dive down low enough to uncouple from whatever the loco is pulling?

Thats one of the things I gotta address, I'm going to suck the coupler into the cab further, it's just a mock up for now...
