BLI has a PRR Pullman listed for the HO CZ,likely there was some sort of NYC car also.
the 100 cars in P-S lot 8160 all had the Same Features:
8' Superior Doors, this may be the 6 Panel listing ?
    Duryea Cushion Underframe
50 Ton ASF A-3 Solid Bearing Trucks
have a list of the break down of the cars some where ??
    but for now:
NYC 25 cars, only PS-1s in Pacemaker paint, and 8' doors on NYC
     PRR 20 cars,unique "Calender" lettering,only PRR  40' PS-1s
     GN 15 cars, only GN 40' PS-1s
Erie 10 cars, only Erie Steel cars built with Superior Doors,Youngstown Steel Door was Online.
N&W not sure how many cars ?
    BAR,maybe 2 cars ?
WP not sure how many cars ?
will look for the roster that's here some where.

Pullman Standard 60' box that were typically auto parts cars on every other railroad and it's stenciled to be returned to the Grand Truck Western at Flint. MI.
Jason

Also known as appliance box cars.....on every other railroad for both 60'ers and 40'ers.

In the case of the GN cars' listings in the Color Guides, that is in fact what 6 Panel is referring to.

To add to the confusion, everyone seems to agree that the GN had only the one series of 15 PS-1s.  So, here is a builder's photo of the GN PS-1s, at the Pullman-Standard plant, in 1954.  Note that they are NOT in the 39400 series, are NOT orange and green, and don't have any special instructions on them.  Thompson's book says they were renumbered in 1960, so that's probably when they were repainted and assigned to the pool.  But what were they doing for the six years before that?

I find it more interesting that they didn't even have a Rocky logo of any kind.

NO mystery.  GN AFE84765 is captioned "Purchase 15 50-ton capacity box cars". 39400-39414 series had loaders applied in 1959 and 1960 and were formerly cars 21950-21964.  The cars in the picture you linked to were modified into the car series Atlas has released models from.

Okay, so I'm not going to let it go yet.

Bryan, what's your take on GN cars 139500-139507?

http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?o=gn&i=gn139501

Jason

Used in paper service according to Thompson.  The GN had this little obsession with wood and paper products/resources for some reason, I don't know why...  :D  I imagine Flint MI might have had a newspaper or printer?  Those were located across the country, no?

Nw, I gotta get dressed and go vote.  Everyone go out and vote!

This old Atlas thread suggests that they received Glacier Green paint in '59-60' before the Loader Scheme.

So a 60' Auto Parts cars with DF2 loaders assigned to the GTW in Flint MI is hauling paper?  :|

I don't doubt that these cars could have gone into paper service, but as-built, I think there's more to the story.

Hmm... I bet they
hauled bananas...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

There is a good article on railroad Freight Car Pooling in the April 1983 issue of RMC.

The article goes over how things changed from the 50s into the 60s to just after deregulation of the railroads in 1980.

Lots of good points on the how's and why's of pooling and then applying those ideas to model railroads. --Brian

You're welcome to dig it up.  The 'auto parts' designation for the 60' cars is a foamer label.  The cars (in the generic sense) may have been designed with the auto industry in mind, but like any manufacturer, PS sure as hell wouldn't say no to selling cars to a road wanting to use them for another purpose.  GN had 60' PC&F cars it used for dry goods and food products; again, not auto parts.  You can call them whatever you want.  That being said, I'm done with this discussion.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

The NP's 60' cars ended up being used in Hay service.

It just so happens that the CGW had the same 60' PS car as the GN car.  It was built the same month as the GN car. This car was used in auto parts service.

http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cgw15000&o=cgw

If you notice, was also assigned the the GTW in Flint Michigan.  :-X

I and don't worry. I do realize I'm talking to myself at this point.
