Thank you for the heads-up! My two purchases are on the way....
Now that Atlas have announced the six foot door version, the only thing they have yet to do are the double doors.... :D
Cheers,
Scott

I guess double-door cars are possible.  But I don't see it as likely since there aren't a lot of roads that had them.  Same holds true for the plug/sliding combination door variant.

Yes, I know you're right Bryan, and so few produced within my timeframe, sadly.

I've been thinking of kitbashing one, but my home road didn't have them and it would be easier just to put down some $$$

 :)
   Brian,
depends what the "Pool" they were in was used to carry.
the 40' GN cars were their only PS-1s and were part of
P-S Lot 8160,100 cars all built alike for at least 5 roads.
it may have been an Auto Parts pool, maybe for Ford ??
  or an Appliance Pool.
untill someone can pin down the Pool it just a guess what
  the cars were used for.

For most of their life I don't think the GN used them for any particular shipper, just assigned them as needed.  They were listed as "special equipped" cars, but the pictures I've seen don't seem to show any special routing stencils, other than a few showing "return to agent GN RY".

There is a picture in the Morning Sun GN book by Hickox of the #39409 that is stenciled to return to the C&EI in Evansville, IN.

In this orange and green scheme and with loaders I would bet the car was assigned and probably off home rails.

I have a few more on my computer and they all have routing information.

The color guide even has one of the numbers that Atlas did and it show routing to the C&EI in Indiana (the other to IC in Illinois). The color guide also show a couple 50' cars in this scheme with loaders and they too had routing (neither GN).

I actually can't find one of these orange and green loader cars without it.  I imagine though some do exist.

I have one listing I'm pretty sure is one of these cars and it was loaded with Refrigerators.

Jason, thanks for the pictures!

The car mentioned above (# 39442) has a - rather unusual - small door on the A end.

What was it's purpose? Wood loading? Grain loading?

GN and NP didn't have any auto plants online so the auto parts assignment idea presented wouldn't be the case.  And this car is a bit of a foob, as the GN's PS1s had 12 side panels, not 10.  The GN preferred 12 side panels on its 40' box cars and most of them were built that way.

That's a lumber door, a common feature on 40' box cars owned by lines serving the Pacific NW.

The Atlas car isn't a foob.  It matches the photo of the PS-1 in the color guide with 10 panels.

GN and NP didn't have any auto plants online so the auto parts assignment idea presented wouldn't be the case.

Not having an auto plant online has no bearing on whether cars could be assigned in that service.  This has been coming up a bit lately, and people just need to get that notion out of their heads.

I have a 10+ page handout that covers all the CGW assigned cars that I'll have to try and get on the computer someday.  It also covers some of the foreign cars that were assigned on the CGW.

An an example, this D&M car was assigned to the CGW agent in Des Moines (along with 40 other DM cement hoppers)

There were also covered hoppers from 5-6 other railroads assigned to the CGW somewhere.  For you I'll mention the 7 NP covered hoppers that were assigned to the CGW agent in Des Moines, IA for Cargill.

I've mentioned several times that the ATSF had assigned flat cars to John Deere in Waterloo, IA.  Soo Line did too.  And for the PRR faithful,  car 19466 was assigned to the Faribult Canning Company in Faribault, MN, and cars 45708, 45719 and 45763 were all assigned to Carnation Company, Waverly, IA.

I believe the Great Northern PS1s were assigned to an Appliance Pool which was North American wide. --Brian

That's probably correct, but as the pictures show, it doesn't mean any car is meant to go anywhere or everywhere.  Cars or groups of cars were still assigned to particular agents.  I assume this was to make sure that agent always had cars available when needed.

And at least on the CGW, the assigned cars were still within a stones throw so to speak of the home road e.g. I don't see any cars assigned out of the mid-west area.

Just for clarity, only these cars are PS-1's and the GN only owned 15 PS-1's in total, all decorated in this scheme.
