but the pictures I've seen don't seem to show any special routing stencils, other than a few showing "return to agent GN RY".

The car mentioned above (# 39442) has a - rather unusual - small door on the A end. What was it's purpose? Wood loading? Grain loading?
And this car is a bit of a foob, as the GN's PS1s had 12 side panels, not 10. The GN preferred 12 side panels on its 40' box cars and most of them were built that way.
GN and NP didn't have any auto plants online so the auto parts assignment idea presented wouldn't be the case.
I believe the Great Northern PS1s were assigned to an Appliance Pool which was North American wide. --Brian
In this orange and green scheme and with loaders I would bet the car was assigned and probably off home rails.http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1415972http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2385627Jason
