Puddington- thanks for that brief explanation.  I was a bit worried that you might make 1000 each of 20 schemes, and there would not be enough Swift ones to go around.  And I realized how dumb my other inquiry was (about meat reefers appropriate to Chicago), since virtually all meat reefers are appropriate to Chicago, hog butcher to the world, etc.

And thanks RapidoBill for the close ups, and the note about V grooved siding.

And until such time as I get the freezer up and running in the N scale ice house, I am not going to be worrying about opening the roof hatches.  Given that I need to search the vacuum bag for a hatch from one of my express reefers, I think you may be on to something gluing them on.

Does anyone know when Armour went to the BIG Armour on the side of the car?

Certainly Ed's Law guarantees that a photo exists somewhere, but I can't imagine that the mechanism to keep a hatch open for ice loading would also be robust enough to keep the hatch open while the car is moving.

And a big thank you to Rapido for continuing to hang out here, as opposed to complaining about Railwire (as if all 1000+ members here are some formless, mashed-up entity) on another forum.

A good point. Actually, I'm not sure that there IS a mechanism on these cars to prop the hatches....

Typical general service reefers (PFE, FGEX, NWX, etc.) have "prop rods" that hold the hatches in an open position at a shallow angle, like this:



The GARX meat reefers had a different latch system altogether. They used an articulated clamp that ran parallel to the end of the car that engaged a pin on the end of the hatch to hold it closed. You can see it here:

There is no provision for a prop rod that would hold the hatch open. Instead, the hatch is designed to just flop back onto the support blocks on the roof. If you zoom in on the photo you can see that the hatches on the far end of the car are in this open position. The near end hatches are simply propped up for the builder's photo.

Still, would be interested in seeing the photos mentioned if they do indeed show these cars running with open hatches.
