I did some prototype research for the new layout, and besides getting a lot of good intel, I was able to catch a very late (or very early?) NS 13T as it rolled south through the Lehigh River Gorge on the NS Lehigh Line. I find its much easier to kill time waiting for trains, when you have a fly rod and fantactic fall fly fishing conditions on the river. (a story for another day)

Nice to get an early start on the weekend though, after 4 months of stunning weather, rain has returned to Vancouver.  I hope we see the sun before March!

Progress continues on the Celgar Pulp Mill scene.  I added some more details and weathered the buildings.  Just lighting and ground cover to go (oh, and those two darn vertical tanks)...

Marked the 2 year anniversary of starting the layout by adding the last sections of fascia near the helix.    Here are a couple of room shots.

Built up some loads from photos I found on the web using Evergreen styrene shapes and dimensional lumber. Need to kill the shine on the banding.

Ooh, potential for a completely different thread, but how about favourite train watching/fly fishing locations?

I nominate CPR's McGillivray Loop (tight curves, 2.2% grade, CP and UP power) on Michel Creek (Cutthrout).

Best Moment: Passing train's engineer sees I have a fish on, whistles, we use hand signals to determine that the fish is a good size, whistles again, and is gone. Priceless!

I really like the smokey/steamy backdrops you're using - it makes for a more seamless "hazy" transition from model to backdrop (especially with the lights placed on the backdrop) and reinforces the heavy industrial theme in a way that's often missing from our model industries.

Ah good questions, I used my 5wt 11' Nymphing Rod chucking big Pheasant Tail Nymphs. When the flows are low coming out of the dam (less than 400 CFS) that place is spectacular.

Ah yes, love it! PA has a the most mileage of class A trout streams east of the Mississippi, and the top big trout river just happens to be the Little Juniata, right along the NS Pittsburg line.  Foamers use to outnumber the fishermen, until the fishing got really good.

Stunning backdrop for the pulp mill Mark.  Very effective misty / foggy atmosphere.

The Fort Nelson layout looks terrific too Andy.  Very similar to what I'm trying to achieve with the AC&Y Spencer build.  Your backdrops are FAR better executed than mine though.

I've been weathering a bunch of box cars recently.  Nothing much photo worthy however.  A more consequential project has been the redo of the ACY 3900 series box car casting.  I was never completly satisfied with the wavy roof line.  Three photos show progress so far:  1) Salvaging parts of the original build.  2)New parts ready to assemble.  3) The reassembled shell.  I think it will look much better.

Milw156:  I wouldn't bother with shine on the banding.  I've seen loads over the years, including a few at the plant I now work at, that were banded with shiny "silver" metal straps, rather than the usual blackened ones.  Unless you're modeling a particular load that had dull or blackened banding, yours looks fine to me.

Just FYI, Geoff Gooderham actually sells resin models of the ex-CP "2200" coaches used by the DM&E (Plum Creek and Silver Lake). Also, Panamint Models makes the correct CP trucks (via Shapeways). Here are mine from a couple of years ago -
