Unforgiving yes, but personally I would want it a bit wider than that concidering what is on the other side of it.

I agree. Also, even though I assume this area is hidden and will remain unfinished, it would look better if something nicer than a random metal join plate was used for the bumper. Maybe a piece 1/8" clear acrylic.  Eric is a fastidious modeler - I'm surprised seeing him doing something like that.  The little details or finishing touches really do count you know.  ;)

If operators will frequent that area, even painting the bare plywood would make that place more welcoming.

EDIT: looks like Eric responded while I was writing this up. Nevermind.  :)

So as not to completely hijack the weekend update, let's take the discussion of Five Fingers Maintenance over to my build thread.

Installed and painted a big section of the lower deck fascia including the Fort Nelson river bridge section.    Also started attaching interim skirting to screen off some of the boxes of stuff and partially completed projects piled up underneath the layout.   It doesn't reach the floor but it is material i have left over so it will do for now.

Still working on those bridge piers.   Rolling stock boxes now replaced by styrofoam bits and pieces..

That is looking awesome!  I know this is a contentious issue among MR's but I love clean lines and dark colours for fascia, valances etc.  It really showcases a layout (as witnessed at grant Eastman's SAR two weeks ago).

In the shortened week I prepared a few more details for the pulp mill scene and revised the building colours a bit.

Next up is to paint and install the roof details (they are set in place right now) and the roll down door for the loading area, weather everything, and add some exterior lights...then finish the ground cover. Detailing this type of scene, I realize now, could quite literally go on forever so I am going to have to cut it off pretty soon.

Hey Jeff: Nice to see my old donation; the "Hinde & Dauch Corrugated Company"; Panther Division lives on with the new layout !!!!!!

Yep it is now on its 3rd layout and still looks great. There are some roof details that I need to fix up.

It's September, 1989 and VIA train No. 5, The Skeena, passes through the BCR/CN interchange yard on its way to Prince George and then on to Prince Rupert, BC.  I dug this old girl out of the storage box along with the rest of the consist, put it on the track and, after a couple of jerky starts it ran like a Swiss watch.  A pretty loud Swiss watch but it ran nonetheless :D.

I told Eric over in his build thread that he should keep his original bumper and rename the  spur to "Five Fingers Maintenance" to "Middle Finger Maintenance."
I thought it was SOOOOOO FUNNNNY that I'm reposing it here. I'm quite pleased with myself.

Chris, that is one nice railroad. Simple but very realistic.

I actually did some train stuff today but nothing pic-worthy.

Ran up to Caboose in Denver and stocked up on some additional track laying supplies in anticipation of expansion and re-laying in code 55.

Also finally--11 months after the disaster--painted the repairs in the wall and ceiling in the train room from last year's burst pipe.  That was the very first thing that would need to happen before an expansion.

The NKP heritage unit leads a train across the Pigeon River as a CN train complete with DPU heads the other way.

Doug:  Those old MiniTrix Fs are TOUGH, aren't they?  Today's models look better, and usually run smoother, but how many will last as long?

What a great thread this week. I can't decide which pictures are my favorite. Everything looks amazing.

I'ld like to know more about that VIA rail consist there?

Which loco? Scratch built steam generator? What else is there and can you posts more pictures?

Thanks.

So much great modelling here this week.

Speaking of Penn Central green...

Now that I have trains running, I need some containers that are era-appropriate.  I have eight in the paint shop for Heypag Lloyd, Cronos, Yang Ming, MSC and TEX.  There are some that decals are not available for so back to scratch.  China Shipping is very common on CN trains.  This artwork, based on the bottom image from the web, will be adapted for the more common 40' variety as well.  Penn Central green was in abundance at my LHS and seems a good base color to work from.  There is a lot of variance in the paint schemes.
