Well, it happened - my kvetching paid off (well, sort of).  My "respect" rating is now +32767. Some moderator must have got tired of me.  However (no, you jut can't make me happy), that wasn't my point all along.   My point is that this whole thing is just bogus.  People might be voting (up or down) on posts by accident (that seems feasible), but more often than not, people down-vote posts either because they disagree with what is in the post or for some other unknown to me reason.  That is what bugs me.

Since these points are called respect, to me they should be earned or lost the way "real" respect is.  But down-voting (lowering someone's respect) just because you don't like someones personal view is bull.  If that post is someones opinion based on facts or just personal preference and is not a trolling post then I don't see how someone could justify lowering that persons respect by down-voting.

The way this voting seems to work, it might make much more sense to call those points karma rather than respect.  I seem to recall karma being used in early stages of adding this rating system. That is because karma is not respect, and I would have no problem with someone down-voting another post (giving negative karma) simply because it presents  an opposite view.

My kvetching was never about my rating - it was about how the system works and how it is used.

On a side note, the rating value I was given (I assume it is the maximum ) seems to indicate that the forum stores the respect points as a signed 16-bit integer.

Pete -ski .... I rarely up ( first I have to remember to up vote it ) or (never) down vote any post .  But I completely agree with you . The down vote is possibly being abused , but until we know who is down voting it's probably a moot point . Myself I don't worry about it ......

It makes me wonder if the code is smart enough to not roll it over to negatives if incremented past 32767. This is the type of thing that (in my coder days) would be frequently overlooked, because nobody could possibly accrue 32K points.

Only way to find out is to keep up-voting my post!   
It seems that since people saw my rating they are determined to knock it down.   

EDIT: Nevermind - I just noticed my rating is back to normal. For a while there I felt YOOGE!

Okay, the way to solve this "problem" (and I use the term loosely), is to have visible "UP" votes...representing respect, and separate visible "DOWN" votes, which represent disrespect, disagreement, hostility, no sex the night before...whatever.    This way, the "respect" value never goes down, since it is is mostly earned...AND, the "disrespect" value never goes up, since that is earned also...maybe.  What changes is the ratio between the two, which is the important value and could be expressed in an additional number representing the "percentage of respect"...or...perhaps just a "percentage of respect" would be the only number, except we'd want to see the total separate up/down votes, because the "percentage" of respect would be greater for a newbie with one "UP" vote and ten posts vs. a long-time-member with 1279 "UP" votes, 20 "DOWN" votes and 3582 posts...which demands a different type of respect.

The respect points work just fine if you know what they are really for.  And until they stop working, there's really no reason to change anything.

Personally I like them.

They help motivate me to contribute positively (not the only factor but yeah  ) and keep me from being too much of a complainer/smartass. 

Just my humble opinion but I think its a positive feature of the forum...
