That's awesome! I'll be doing some of that in my future.

Alternate version:

He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

Here's the scribed roof photos:

Roof with seams:

Here's the Micromark sciber and a ziptie with styrene spacer glued on to estimate the main panel length as you go.

For core kits, I'd call Des Plaines Hobbies.  They have several hundred shots of the American Limited core kits left over from when they were being used for the CCS assembled cars.  They usually have a bunch of the roof/floor/end sprues for sale separately.

To get more of a raised seam, have you tried using an x-acto to make a light cut and then run your fingernail back over the ridge to knock it down?  I know I've used it before, but it was a long time ago. I doubt I have pictures, but remember it looking good.

That's pretty much what Bill Denton does, Jason.

Okay, good to know.  It occurred to me after I posted that maybe it doesn't work as well on plastics not as soft as styrene.

You have the roof already. Just RP the vents. The process is better suited for small detail parts over large body parts anyway.

There goes Bryan, making sense.  Embarrassingly, it's been so long, I've forgotten which car I was even doing.  I've got some RP stuff to get done.  I should be able to throw in some vents if I can figure out what car it's supposed to be.

Yes, but there have been complications.  The OP didn't want to get into that, so let's leave it at that.

They are molded styrene so it works fine.  The prototype roof is a slightly raised weld bead on Pullman Standard cars.  I can't remember now if the ACF car roofs were any different, but at the time I was trying to match the Kato roof seams which are indentations.  Either way the zip-tie method is the best for getting a continuous straight edge held down to the roof.  Carve with any tool after that!

I called Des Plaines Hobbies today, and alas they said that they no longer have any core kits.  They do still have some complete car kits (sides + core).

Update:   I was just able to purchase some of the body sprues from San Juan Car - this is the sprue with the roof, floor, ends, and vestibule end doors.  No detail sprue - apparently that's what is giving them trouble.  I sent e-mail to them at the contact address on their web site (http://www.sanjuancarco.com/) and received a reply the next day, and had bodies in hand a few days later.

This was posted to the Passenger Car List @ Yahoo! Groups and forwarded to several others...

This has been posted to the Passenger Car List and several other Groups and with Keith's permission I am posting it here for members who may not have already seen this announcement...

Disclaimer: I have not been asked to distribute this information. I have no financial interest in any company. I have not and will not receive any compensation related to the sale of these products.

ATTENTION ALL N SCALERS!
As many people know, the American Limited passenger car core kit has been unavailable for many years due to technical difficulties with the detail parts tooling. I have been corresponding with the San Juan Car Co., owners of the American Limited line, concerning the return of their N scale core kit to the market.

As it turns out, San Juan Car can produce the sprue with the roof, floor and ends in Black or Grey. They are willing to sell these "body" sprues for $5 each, plus shipping.

Send an email to: sanjuancar@durango.net
State the quantity and color of the sprues you want.
Provide your address.
Provide any special shipping instructions, like Express Mail or insurance.

They will provide the total via email.

PayPal is preferred. Send payment to sanjuancar@durango.net. Make sure you send as "goods or services" to preserve your buyer protection. I recommend you put a short description in the note. For example: 10 black body sprues, plus shipping".

If you don't have PayPal, they can process credit cards in their store. Provide your phone and the best time to call you.

Please be patient. This item is being offered as a courtesy to N scale modelers. This is not available through their website. We didn't discuss it, but don't expect retail packaging or instructions.

If he asks, tell him Keith sent you.
