New Product Development: Sugar Beet Refinery

I love old factories. The next kit I am developing will be based on one of my all time favorite. We would drive by this all the time when I was a kid on our way to my grandparents' house.








I recently learned it was a sugar beet refinery. Here is the first attempt at making it for my layout:


























I am currently working on plans to make this into three modules, so that you can buy one, two, or all three. Each one will be able to stand on its own. I will also have the smokestack available. The final product will be shorter than the prototype, along with some other minor aesthetic changes. There will be an option between brick, concrete, or a combination. Also I will offer a choice in roofing. I am hoping to have module one ready within the next month or two.

Any possibility of offering the windows as a separate detail sheet?

The building is in Preston, ID (Napoleon Dynamite fame). The first module will be the tall square portion, and it is about 3" x. 3.5" x 7". The connected building is 9" long but the module will be shorter than that. The other structure is about 9" in length as well. I think about 2.5" wide. Anyway, the kit won't be the exact same size but close.

a guy with 100+ beet racks this interests me beyond my ability to communicate with words...

Absolutely. I have a lot of windows I've designed I just never thought of selling them separately. I could make my brick station kit windows available. I have a section for texture sheets already, so I could add a windows section. What a great idea! Thanks! Feel free to contact me about what you would want.

I like the idea of big industries, the bigger the better - let the builder downsize it if s/he wants.  That being said, the structure you have there is expansive and has lots of big windows to see into the structure, making for an obviously big empty industry.  Any plans for the interior - either providing for one or helping the modeler fill it?

big factories... big windows...  either scale...

just offer the right door's for the right scale

I had no plans for the inside. I would be interested in knowing how I could help fill it though.

Would make for a great textile mill boiler room and dye house in the southeast... made from the brick version it would be a natural.

I'm hoping it has a lot of versatility. I'm gonna try and have a first attempt brick version by Monday.
