That looks workable.  Thanks DKS.  Glad you had a minute! ;)

Okay, so I settled on the 12" door I had in stock, and spent a few quality moments with the band saw... The 16" door covered too much real estate on the "business" end of the desk.  This is less obtrusive, and once finished, will blend nicely with the book case at the end of it.

Here's an overview of how it wraps around my work computer screen.

This end will house the yard, a run around track, and the engine house and car shop.  Not sure how it will all work out, but I'm sure I can squeeze it all in.

Here's where the new yard module will tie in to the rest of the layout.

Next I'll get out my stock of turnouts and track and see what I come up with based on the drawings shared above.

This will add significantly to the operation of your layout.  The triangle to the left of your monitor might support a small rail-served industry with a facing point spur for additional interest.

I'm contemplating adding an industry there.  I'm thinking a fuel oil/coal dealer, or perhaps an auto salvage/scrap dealer.  (I have a slew of gondolas!)

The actual dimensions are the 12" x 10" triangle to the left of the monitor, a 6"x22" wide strip behind, and a shade under 4' to the right.  Total length is still 80".

It's almost identical to the old Elkins yard, which presently resides on the Gulf Coast masquerading as a swamp.

Thinking about a similar riff, but having the "main" bend toward the front of the shelf, and keep the yard bowl behind it.  This would put the uncoupling chores closer to my operating "pit".  something like this:

As with all things, this project is being woven in and amongst a whole pile of other things, so stay tuned for news as it happens... probably very slowly!

Hmmmm ... this "compact" layout seems to be getting less compact. So you keep adding on, and Ed K. keep adding on, and eventually join your two layouts ... :D

Nibbled out a little bit of the deck to provide some scenery elements on the way to the yard...

After staring at the little channel I cut for the river bed yesterday, I decided that this would be a good opportunity to trim it back bit to make the scene a bit broader.

As with the mock up I used for the Railwire Express photos, I'll have a roadway pass under the bridge alongside the stream.  This affords me a better view of the bridge from my work station.

I've opted against cramming an industry in that corner.  There's not much room once the bank was trimmed back, plus the most practical access to the parcel was from a spot behind the monitor, and I just don't think it's wise to put a switch where I can't see it.

I can see that I have to put a block under the door panel at the junction with the main layout, as the 1/8" door skin is already drooping.

AAAARGH!

Just a moment to vent...  Having dismantled a fairly large layout over a fairly lengthy period of time, bits and pieces of it have been randomly stashed all over the place.

I'm at an almost total stand still for want of the Big Box of Turnouts that was salvaged.  I keep coming across the one or two that ended up somewhere else, and of course, all the ones with broken points, bent frogs and otherwise crippling defects...  I know they're around here somewhere...  GRRRRR.

I need a proper train room/workshop.... :x

I hear ya, Lee. I don't have a proper train room/workshop. All of my stuff is either in storage containers or shoe boxes, and my work bench is a piece of plywood on a folding auto body stand.

It's why I love the clear Ikea totes:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09850874/

I can see what's in em, and they keep the water out.

I don't think I'll be using them for EVERYTHING in my upcoming move, but likely will for the important stuff (ie, trains and tools).

My trouble is that we're receiving more junk than we're shipping out.
Since I moved here in 2012, in addition to the influx of my stuff, we've taken in the stuff from her dad's antiques business after his wife moved to Rhode Island, stuff from her brother when he graduated from UM and moved back to North Carolina, stuff from my mom when she downsized to my sister's house, stored stuff from her previous move that her ex needed to unload, plus a bunch of accumulated detritus that we've added...remodel supplies for the house, our own tools and what nots...  Most recently we've been waiting for the furnace man to come install the new heat pump that's taking up half the floor space (which isn't much) in the garage.

So identifying the box is only half the battle.  First I have to do an archaeological dig to see which layer of stuff it's buried in...

Oh well.  I guess I better spend my time pursuing paying work!

Thanks, Jeff.
I've got another offer on the way.  I doubt I'll be doing much with them any time soon... it's spring and the construction design phone has started ringing again...

But if I end up needing something, I'll let you know!
