Anyway I got out the Pan Pastels and broke out a Paasche Air Eraser I have never used since i inherited it some 20 years ago.
This is an Eastern Seaboard Models 222701 PC ex-PRR Patch X58 boxcar.
I used the air eraser to remove most of the yellow lettering as well as some of the patch paint and then went to town with the Pan Pastels. On a couple places on the sides and along the lower sills i wet the surface and dabbed on pastels for some texture.
I then coated with Floquil Flat lacquer in a can. I am happy with it and hope to try more soon.

Great job Mike!

Gotta say I luv Pan Pastels (which I got from you folks)... 

They do a terrific job and much less messy than weathering powders.

I like it!  Myself I'm not good at weathering stuff.   Maybe someday....

Start subtle. Once you see the difference in how much more real your model looks, you'll be hooked.

Ditto on the Pan Pastels.

I think you should have just posted " Let's see your weathering " without starting with a photo.  That is so good, no one else wants to post their own.  :facepalm:

I've done some on structures on a friend's layout, but I just don't feel comfortable with it.  Looking at what others can accomplish I have a strong feeling that some modelers have a natural talent for realistic weathering.  I like my models clean (fully acknowledging that it is unrealistic in 1:1 world).

If you had your own layout, you might see it differently. But then again you might want to model a perfect world. Personally I like the gritty world of railroading. I find beauty in rust and grime. A while back my 20-something step daughter paid a rare visit to my office/hobby room. She looked around and said, Do you ever make anything pretty?

I guess it's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
