Train #27 was a pretty unremarkable Chicago-Milwaukee train in the timetable. No Skytops or Super Domes on this short daily 85 minute run to Milwaukee. However it was unique in that it regularly carried a Los Angeles to Milwaukee storage mail car. This car was usually a Santa Fe "economy" baggage car received from the AT&SF in Chicago. Here we see a typical consist of Train #27 leaving Chicago.

Bill, would I be correct in identifying that scene as the Kingsbury branch?  Have always been impressed by your layout, I had a business a few blocks away in the 1980s, and always enjoy seeing photos of the layout in publications.

Would I be correct to guess the car made a connection to ATSF #7&8 (Fast Mail) or did it go via KC Chief or Grand Canyon?  Any chance that Milwaukee cars made it onto those trains every once in a while?  Also, any idea what years the cars ran Milwaukee to LA?  OK, I admit it, I am just looking to an excuse to wedge a Milwaukee baggage car between my ATSF fishbelly baggage cars and a PRR B-60b.

Yes, it is my Kingsbury Branch. However I don't know much more about the Santa Fe car and connections. I doubt Milwaukee baggage cars went west on the Santa Fe but they did go west on the GN !

Found the car in a 1963 consist for ATSF #8 (the Fast Mail) LA to Milwaukee (on the "GMBus" site).  It traveled between Gallup NM and KC on train #4, which was a mail train descendant of the California Limited, along with a number of other cars from the eastbound #8, then was added back into #8 for the last leg to Chicago.  It shows the car leaving LA daily except Tuesday.  Have not found its eastbound route yet (if it had one).

Looks nice Bill - but there is no way this made it up to Milwaukee on those tracks.  And if this is post '73, the swing bridge to even *get* here from Union is gone! :tommann:

Well first of all I was modeling Train #27 not the whole Chicago-Milwaukee corridor  :trollface: I just needed  a place to photograph the train  :facepalm:

Actually the train COULD get to Milwaukee via this trackage. North on Chicago and Evanston trackage then west on the Bloomingdale line and finally north again when it crosses the Chicago-Milwaukee mainline. Of course it's pre 1973 and the swing bridge near Union station is still intact as this is a Milwaukee Road train and NOT Amtrack (1971). CHECKMATE  :tommann:

Of course I love your models Bill. Do you happen to know when this service started in conjunction with the ATSF? I model an earlier era and it would be fun to include a Santa Fe car of some type on my orange trains.

I wonder which type of cars would be used in an earlier service.

I also have some DL&W cars that show up on pictures of Milwaukee trains among others.

Naturally I have a (large) collection of REA cars.

You are truly an inspiring model builder !!!
