Weren't there also top loading "hide" cars on BN?

I have also heard that the L&N had hide cars but have not been able to find pix of any examples...

I seem to remember a discussion here years back about hide cars... and their smell. This lead to a conversation about "sweet" cars that would haul offal by the gondola-full. Lord help the poor switch man at the end of the hump yard.

There was a Railroad Model Craftsman article in the 1980s (?) on these cars. As I recall they were 40 and 50 footers and had long trough covers rather than round hatches.

On the model — how do you get on the roof to access the hatches if all the ladders are half height?  Was the prototype configured the same way?

On the prototype the end ladders are full length and the side ladders are short...

The ladders on the ends were still full height.

The GN had eleven cars, 21950 to 21961 (one number not used), which were used for hauling "foundry sand".   These were wood-sheathed cars, from the 45000-52999 series, and lasted into the BN era.  Unlike some of the cars mentioned here, they kept their full-height side ladders. 

Interestingly, one of these cars is believed to be the only GN boxcar ever painted Vermillion Red with BSB-style lettering.  I haven't found an online picture, but one can be found in Four Ways West's "GN Equipment Pictorial Vol 1".

on the 23xxx car the brakewheel is low...  and the ladder goes to the top.
