Being very please with my self I just had to share this, I just assembled the body mount couplers and fitted them into the shell, all part of the checking I am doing.  They fitted perfectly first time and....





Hows that for level!

I can't help but to wonder if a Kato RSC2 could be used to model an AS416???  But then, where would we find trucks for such an unit???  I know of only the original Columbus & Greenville, Norfolk Southern and Savannah & Atlanta, though this only amounts to 21 domestic units and 4 export units.

Then again I would love to see a way of modeling an ALCO RSC3 as well...

Here is a quick update on how the 1st DT6-6-2000 is coming along, thanks to Bob Norris for the work and photos.

The shell all cleaned.





And with the First coat of paint.



I am really pleased with how well the door and louver details have come out.   In fact all the detail is great and no overhang issues.  This shell has been cleaned in Goo Gone which I have found has little to no affect on the actual FUD.

James, thanks for the progress pic, the casting looks really good, although the all black probably doesn't do it justice. I'm surprised that the Goo Gone works, but it obviously does.
My shell is on order and time will tell how long it takes Shapeways to deliver.

By the color of the cleaned model I'd say Goo Gone didn't get it all. Should be bright white.

24 hours later it was, I just have no photos of that.  When I take prints out of the Goo Gone they are quite yellow but the waxy residue just falls off under the tap.  Then I leave them to dry over night and they turn opaque and white ready for painting.

Looks pretty good painted black.  I was wondering how it would turn out because you could see the striations from the layering process in some of the close up pictures, but it seems to have cleaned up well.

I have also found your blog site interesting.  You seem to have a pretty good handle on how to design these things.  I'll be watching because I want to learn a few things, too.

Well, he does have a point.  I'm looking forward to detailed shots of this bad boy in primer so I can make a purchasing decision.  I may need two of those just my east of Chicago and west of Chicago yens.

Goo-Gone probably left a residue. That is why Bestine is the best - no residue.  While the details on the shell look very impressive the black finish looks a bit textured to me. Is the surface really textured, or is my brain (knowing this is FUD) seeing something that is not there?

EDIT: depending on how the parts were printed, it is possible to have certain areas translucent milky color (not opaque white) even after a thorough cleaning.

James is in Great Britain and doesn't have access to Bestine, and I also suspect heptane is probably tough to find just as it is hard to find here without connections to a chemicals supplier. He and I have had this chat.

Maybe Ronsonol Lighter Fluid (Naphtha) would do the trick?

Tried to order shell but received a E Mail that it couldn't print it and a refund was sent.....Anybody else have this problem/    Jim
