Why are those Rio Grande F units parked under that mine dump?

While acknowledging that this is a unique model of this locomotive, it will be interesting to see how others judge the surface quality of these.  The  handrails remind me of the old Arnold GP7/9 handrails (I realize that there are limitations of the FUD process and that this is something that can be changed fairly easily).

I was thumbing through one of the Stagner ATSF books this morning, specifically looking for pics of these...and found one taken in 1949 at Ash Fork....the paint scheme was slightly different that this one...didn't have zebra stripes on the pilots, and the zebra striping didn't go up beyond the side sill...would that be correct for your 1950 era?

Yes Bruce, maybe...
The original version was zebra on side sills only, then sometime by 1951 the full zebra (like James' pictures) and later still an extended zebra including striping on the shrouds between trucks. I'm trying to find out when version 1 was changed to version 2 and suspect sometime in 1950 or early 51, at least on the San Bernardino unit(s).
The early version would sure be easier to do...

Just thought I'd mention... I was at Michaels today and saw Bestine with a red tag on it. Looked closer it was on clearance for $4.99, down from $16.99    So I bought 2 more for less than my first one was.

OOoo. Apparently they're discontinuing the SKU. Thanks for the heads-up. I will stop by the Michaels en route from errands tomorrow. If it's the same deal, I'll buy what's left.

What you are seeing is the train exit track from the mine on Bob Norris Layout - Somewhere west.  This area happens to be a ideal height for photography.  On the other end of the F units is a 40 car coal coal train hidden in the mountain. There are two tracks running into the mine, the tracks do a u turn under the mountain and on the other side of the divide pop out of a power station.  So one line is empties in, the other is loaded out.
