I have a thread on the subject that I have not updated in a while.  I first took on doing a Lima switcher as I figured that would be an easier project to allow me to figure out a few techniques.

So, here's the Lima switcher as of two weeks ago:



Notice that I'm using brass etches in several places; the radiator shutters are styrene sheet cut to fit the hole in the 3D printed shell.  The radiator grill on top as well as the exhaust stack were printed separately and glued on.  At the time of the photo, I had not yet applied number boards, but they were also separately printed.  The original plan was to use Archer Transfers louvers, but that is much too time consuming to do all the doors, hence my new experiments with etched hood doors that contain louvers, hinges, and a hole for a handle.

For the frame halves on the centercab, I've got a set of 3D printed masters that fits the Atlas components and I have sent them to a friend of mine who is going to cast them in brass.  This should result in a locomotive that will be nice and heavy.  It will take the standard drop in C630 decoders, but you'll need to replace one of the LEDs with one that has longer leads and sticks out a bit further.

Good news!  The DT6-6-2000 test print is on its way, Shapeways have dispatched 2 days early!  Happy Days!

Right then peeps, the test print arrived today and.....................

It looks fantastic.

I haven't cleaned it properly yet so it is still covered in goo which, as some of you know, makes it relay hard to photograph! Plus a lot of the detail cant be seen properly until it turns opaque but I wanted show you what it looked like anyway.

So right out of the Shapeways bag.



The two engineers, lets go with Burt and Ernie, came out well.



All the details I added to the roof appear to have come out well, horns, stacks, grills etc



As did the diamond plate walkways.



Once I had removed the handrails from the inside of the shell I could start test fitting it all. (I just couldn't wait till it was all cleaned up).



The side frames clipped into place over the Atlas trucks perfectly.





I tested the chassis at this point and it ran like a dream. Next I tried the actual shell and it fell into place with a satisfying click as all the lugs and mounts lined up.



With that I had to test it on the track!



As I said before it still needs cleaning as a lot of the detail can't be seen yet and it all look very fuzzy due to the waxy residue but I am very happy with the test print. Over the weekend I will check it out properly and clean it all up. I will get you some better pics and hopefully I can release it to you next week.

The wax also hides all the layering and fuzziness.  All the FUD sins will come up to the surface once the wax is removed.

LOL! Just being realistic.    The design work is outstanding - it is the printing process that I'm a bit leery about.

The unpainted shell and trucks make this model look like a ghost train.  Or like a brine shrimp where you can see the internal organs. Kind of cool!

Anyone have suggestions for model paint colors to approximate the EJ&E yellow and green scheme?  Also, any sources of decals?

Spooky you would say that... I caught that exact phrase on a recording, voiced by a buddy while we were chasing one of Trona's DT6's in '73. The desert air and the weak blat horn added to the ethereal, goosebump-raising ambiance.

Speaking of, look at all that room at each end for sound and extra weight!  This guy could be a great sounding, stump pulling model!  Despite the debate on the quality of the actual printing process, with a little care this can be cleaned up and complemented with etched details for an outstanding model.  Even if you don't want to deal with the layers where else are you going to get this model, at this quality, for a reasonable price?

I'm looking forward to watching his come together!
