More ballast!
The glue is still wet, but I think it's looking pretty good so far!
This means that there is only 4.5" of track that still needs to be ballasted.

Tomorrow I go on a mission to collect the necessary soil to do the dirt roads and such. I also plan on completing the riverbed and getting that taken care of.

Nice work; also, your work inside the bridge isn't anything to be ashamed of. It's a tricky spot and it looks like you did your best. If there's a gap, perhaps you could hide it with some vines growing over the portal? It's pretty easy to make them. Just get a thin paintbrush and some white glue; paint white glue where you want vines, then blow some fine ground foam onto the glue. Give it time to dry, then blow on the area again; anything not glued down will go away and you'll have instant vines

Soil collecting mission was an utter failure. The source I had found for a fine cream/light-tan color soil is now gone. I mourn its loss.

In other news, I tweezered a few cat-hairs off the layout today. Luckily they were just laying loose on the older section of ballast rather than embedded in the new ballast.

More ballasting was done last night. There is now only one inch of unballasted track remaining!

Cody, what kind of ballast are you using?  This salt-n-pepper look reminds me of the Kato ballast they sell to blend-in with their Unitrack roadbed.

It's a Noch product sold by Gaugemaster in their packaging. I picked it up while I was in the UK last year.
I forget how much it cost me.

As you can see there's a bit more pepper in the salt compared to the Kato ballast.

In all seriousness though, I will get it done soon enough. I just need to play with some spackle a bit more to get things around the one abutment finished, then I can go ahead and ballast.  :D
I left that last inch unballasted so that I'd have plenty of breathing room while spackling and then painting said spackle.

Ok folks... I'm getting ready to do a big push here to not only finish the ballasting, but do the riverbed and the dirt road in preparation for greenery next weekend.

However, I have a few questions:

Since the majority of the scenery will be static grass, which I've never worked with before, is there anything I need to do to the ground befor it gets grassed?
Do I just leave it the bare brown, or would it be best that a layer of ground foam be put down first?

I've also never done a river. So I'd like some advice on how I should go about prepping the riverbed.

I think prep work is dictated by the look you are going for. I've done static grass first, ground foam first. Static grass only and ground foam only. Check photos and decide.

As to river beds, regardless of the product you intend to use, make sure the river bed is absolutely leak proof. Is set your layout up so you can see it really close and run over the bed with a magnifying glass. If you are using a poured epoxy or similar make sure the layout is level before you pour, and make sure your bed is sealed with a good dam across the end. Finally don't run your scenery all the way down to the waters edge unless you are doing aquatic plants. That way if the "water" creeps up a bit you can just cover it with bushes etc.
