HuskerN usually seems to be pretty tight-lipped about the details of his models. I would love to know how he designs his models. For example, are they based on factory drawings (paper or CAD), 3D scans of the 1:1 trucks, or he simply eyeballs the shape from various photos?

My question was regarding the paint used as the finish is quite impressive for a 3D model. That said, if the design was eyeballed, that was one heck of a job as they really look good judging from the photos!

After painting several of my own printed trucks, I have found that a couple generous coats of primer followed by a couple generous coats of color will offer a nice smooth finish.  I am using testors paint cans for most of my painting since it is quick and easy to paint several different colors this way.  I then hand paint the details and hit it with a coat of gloss to seal it.

The UPS trucks are Testers brown.

OK, thanks! They look great!

On a different note, I've pondered the idea of putting a UPS transfer facility on my layout to stage/display some of these trailers but always thought it would take up too much space. Today I found these pics of what looks like a small transfer facility that could possibly be closely-approximated using Pikestuff kit or kits as a starting point....

I just received a batch of the Train-worx 28' Pup trailers.  Not only they have the correct "United Parcel Service" lettering, the box insert has a UPS logo and statement that these are officially licensed models!  I think this is a first in N scale.

While I don't know if it was a high licensing fee or other difficulties, UPS has been notoriously difficult to deal with when it comes to merchandising models.  I'm really surprised to see this happen.  I wonder if this means that we can expect other official licensed UPS items, such as trucks and tractors, to pull those lovely trailers.  That would be awesome!

MODS: feel free to move this to the N scale forum.

Petski,

Athearn produced UPS licensed Ford C box vans back in 2011.   It was the winner of the Enhanced N Scale Vehicle of the Year Award.  http://nscalevehicles.org/vehicle_of_year/2012.php

When Pat Sanders displayed these trailers at the 2011 N Scale Convention in Hersey, PA he was hoping to be able to get them licensed by UPS, but he was not very optimistic that he would be successful.

Pat deserves congratulations from all of us in sticking with it, and getting it accomplished.  I prefer the pad printed models to trying to piece together decals!

with all of this excitement, I thought I would throw a design together for a non-drop frame.  I'll see how it prints.

These would be cool along with some UPS decals.

And maybe some of the 45ft trailers and the 42ft Martec trailers.

Nice! Please keep us updated John, I'm very interested in these. I was wondering how long it was going to take you to move on to intermodal loads....

Athearn released the box truck a couple of years ago as a limited item, but these may be the first stock items to be licensed.

UPDATE:  Oops, I see Carter already has mentioned this.

Question....  did these get announce/listed as coming with decals - and then "surprisingly" get delivered with printed UPS identification?

I am very confused, since the part numbers in some places are identical - down to the last two "digits identifying a road number",  but some places say decals and others don't - and all show the model with the lettering in place....

Thanks...

OK,  I read it for the third time (once in March and twice tonight) and my question is not answered.

The question, to be specific, is:   "Is the product description for the recent TWX 28' UPS pups INCORRECT at most e-tailers"?

My reason for asking is, that I amazingly found a batch of these today with the right numbers, etc.  But noticed after ordering the
product description says includes alpha decals.  However, the part numbers match the 3/14 release date on the TWX site.  Also,
at Walthers the product description is wrong and it is clearly referencing the backordered trailers.

The first 6 released, last 6 part numbers, come with the alpha decals, the last group of 12, the first 12 part numbers, come with UPS lettering and markings.
