The weathered units look very nice, almost tempted.

What is with the z-scale containerized houses?  They look carved by hand- maybe it is the photo.

Can anyone give me a brief overview of B&O freight schemes? There seem to be several but I'm not sure of the years they were in use.

Seems kinda weird they'd do a "Containerized Housing Unit" or CHU.  none of those were brought back.

Yet another Swift scheme on an inappropriate model when they have an appropriate model available to use.

Thanks for the info.  ;)  No sale, when will they learn?  :?

By which you mean the steel underframe 36 footer?
I do wish M/T would give us more "modern" 36' meat reefers (by which I mean post-billboard era, simple paint schemes).

Who actually owned those 100T hoppers - I thought it was C&O,  CR  and NW??  Or am I wrong.

Yes.  It's a no-brainer.

They should.  When it comes to wood reefers, for some reason they feel more people model the early 20th century than the mid 20th century.

Can anyone give me a brief overview of B&O freight schemes? There seem to be several but I'm not sure of the years they were in use.

Pre-1960 schemes are on the B&O Historical Society web site. Scroll to the bottom of the page to download the PDF files.

http://borhs.org/Logos/bo_font_logo.html

I don't model the B&O after 1960 so I am less familiar with those lettering diagrams, but after the C&O acquisition it was sometimes almost anything goes. The stenciling shown on the B&O 50-ft boxcar is probably mid-1960s; unfortunately, as Bryan has noted with the Swift reefer, the MTL car body is incorrect. The B&O owned no PS-1 50-ft boxcars until after 1960 and those had overhanging roof eaves common on all-steel reefers.

The B&O Color Guide probably remains the best source of post-1960s photos of B&O box cars. After the C&O acquisition the change was removing the "13 States" ring around the capitol dome emblem with the billboard "B&O" still to the left of the door. The next change was as depicted in the MTL model was to move the "Capitol dome" emblem to the left of the door and the billboard "B&O" to the right. In this period you will see "over-paints" using C&O lettering stencils and eventually the stenciling moved to using C&O stencil types plain with no emblems or billboard "B&O" especially if the work was done in the C&O Raceland shops.

I hope still helps ...

Regards,

Bob Witt

I forgot to comment on the road number, 289247, used by MTL.

The number would fall in the B&O/C&O class B-42 converted from former B&O class M-65 50-ft double door box cars built from parts in the B&O DuBois shops in 1957. These were essentially modern versions of AAR standard box cars with late improved Dreadnaught ends, rivets construction, and diagonal roofs with over hanging roof eaves. The series 289175 - 289251 were equipped with "19 DF-2 BELTS". I have no date for the conversion, but it was after 1960 and before 1970.

There is no correct car body in N scale. Branchline/Atlas did them in HO with the correct roof.

Well, mildly interested in the UP bulkhead.  Era is legit, and there's a "bingo" in my modeled area, albeit not even close to the same car.   I think it will fall squarely on my "look for it cheap at a trainshow" list.

As always, I'll anxiously await the weathered releases and hope I can get one.   I did finally find my HS set @ about 20% over retail.  It's damn nice though.

Note the IL of 26-6 on the Swift car, the tell that it should be a 36' car.

The New York Central 10-1-2 is a foob also.  Car name is missing, should be either Lake Colville or Lake Huntley.  And I think the lettering and pinstripes should be silver and not white.  The NYCHS recently designated the RPO decoration as being inaccurate due to the white lettering.
