Just curious if there is any problem trying to match the Trainmaster trucks to the SD60 chassis. Do the gears line up alright?


As far as I can tell the design is identical , and works just as well . Just make sure you loosen the 2 frame screws a bit and carefully pry the halves apart . just a little will do ya .

Super transfermaster?

As promiced, Pictures. still working over the seams, and trying to chip off the paint.



Nice , I soaked my shells in 91 proof over night and then put the tooth brush to them before splicing .

Still waiting for the sill so I can attempt to swap out the steps and pilot faces .

thats what I did when I rebuilt my H12-44, but the paint on these ones is literally just flaking off. I've been working it with a toothpick and time. the only place where the paint doesn't flake off is the grills, which I will just attack withsome 91 etoh.

And here's the real choice: which railroad do you really want to deface to get the two shells for bash together? Actually, with this picture, you could have just as easily left it unstripped and it would look believable just as it is, to be a long neglected oddity of the Penn Central roster that they just couldn't afford to repaint.

I am definitely considering doing this project, too. It definitely seems to be turning in to a railwire members rite of passage.

got my mech parts today, and got it built, working on stripping the last of the paint on the shell now. Also got my trainmaster sills, I'm going to have to section a portion out of ends to be able to use them. it's rolling along though....

EDIT: decided to break out the camrea and get some shitty picture.  :trollface:




I had planned on wacking off the shell ends and use the trainmaster ones. sectioning of the trainmaster ends didn't go well, so this was the compromise, I'm happy with it overall, might add a 4th step to the bottom.....

The tank is a atlas sd60 tank from the atlas parts dept. I ordered that when I ordered all the stuff to do the mech.

They are the ones from the train master sill. I tried sectioning out basically a section the height of one step and well between steps, but it didn't end well. I ended up just cutting the faces off, and sanding them down thin on the backside, the sectioned out enough to make it fit on the existing face. Then I used to top edge to be able to keep the MU plugs.

It's a classic example of ***** going wrong, but turning out good in the outrun.

Still on the list is to do the cowling over the fuel tank, hand rails, plug the SP light package holes, new headlight housings, and decoder. I'm thinking about doing functioning class lights not sure if it would be appropriate for this type of loco though. I'm thinking about foobing it into NP, giving it number 999, given 99 was a center cab 44 ton switcher, 999 would make it a big BIG brother! :D

It really didn't hit me how BIG this thing is until I got a mech under it. I think this is the largest diesel I own now. This has been a great project, glad we pulled the trigger and did it!

I did some work on my version of the T24-66. I added the cowling over the fuel tank, and the end cosmetic corners on the steps. I also added the hand rails on the ends of the locos. I chopped up some more of the trainmaster hand rails for these. I'm planning on putting wire hand rails on the hood, like i did with my H12-44. I also plugged the old frame attachment holes with styrine, and filled the old hand rail holes with thick CA then sanded everything smooth, it looks pretty good now, and I'm pretty happy with it. I still need to fill the SP light package holes on the hoods, do the wire grabs for the hand rails, air tanks to go on the fuel tanks, fuel filler and sight glass. I'm also going to decoder it, and I'm planning on re-doing the headlights, and attach some small LEDs to the shell for the lighting. I'm thinking about lighting the small numberboards on the hoods also, still up in the air on that though. I'm pretty happy with the fitment of the shell on the frame, so I'm not going to worry about adding any shims, or locks like Richie has, although I need to add some blocks to keep the mech from sliding back and forth in the frame.

Looks great Mike. You have managed to capture the impractical nature of the prototype! The cowling over the fuel tank is a nice touch.
