I'm surprised you stuck with the same ballast color for both railroads.

Another couple feet of ballast.

This is a great scene, love the cinders under the ballast.

Shows what I know (and can see with my damned colorblind eyes)!  I thought the ballast around the B&O trackage looked darker.

The intersecting rail line ballast looks a hair darker to my eye on this monitor... Chris, what are we looking at !? :scared:

I'm seeing some color differences as well. Just enough difference to make it stand apart.

Yes the B&O tracks are a darker grey, it is the most contrasting color I had. It has some cinders and dirt mixed it as well. Also the Erie main is ME flex while the B&O is Atlas flex.  :P

Chris, The interlocking scene is truly phenomenal, very nicely done. Will you be adding some type of signals to protect the diamond?

I hope so. Erie used semaphores, so I will need to learn about them first. Then I will probably etch parts in brass.

I can tell you this much, the PRR Position Light Signals were created to mimic semaphores signals in light form.

Vertical lights and semaphore blade = clear.
Lights and semaphore blade at a 45 degree angle = approach.
Horizontal lights and semaphore blade = stop.

You built the diamonds? Very nice.
One thing about crossings: I've seen prototype ones with solid steel plates at the center, either with channels or open spaces for the flanges to cross through. What's  up with those?

The diamonds are Atlas C55 pieces. Some Erie crossings had movable points like a turnout like this:

Most of the semaphores around here had 2 targets on them. Here is the layout of the real B&O crossing the Erie at "P" tower:

I glued down the styrene "road" on this side of the layout:

And I did a little more ballast, still wet:
