Yeah, that's one way with maybe different size coal represented and a small portable conveyor.  The yard does seem big enough to support a small tipple trucks could back up to.

Not that you have to have a tipple, just something that popped in my head.  Maybe it would be too much for the front of the layout anyway.

Most coal dealers that would have a tipple or silos also had an elevator to lift the coal up. Most coal trestles just dump coal to the ground and a small portable conveyor gets it in the truck. This trestle had bins built into the trestle for holding the coal. I'm guessing most trucks just backed up to the chute and loaded up.

This plan is when built in wood, but still shows 5 bins in the middle of the trestle.

You can see bins and chutes under this other trestle.  I think it can be more than just coal dumped on the ground if you you wanted to.  Waterloo had a several dealers that were just piles on the ground with maybe a clamshell crane for loading trucks, but also had a large dealer with a pretty large tipple that I can hopefully get a good shot of someday.

I did get this off ebay a few years ago which shows two coal yards (just in piles) on the left and the tipple I was talking about.

I have 3 packs of the ones by Model Tech Studios. They are laser cut wheels, a resin conveyor piece that wasn't glued straight before it was cast, and some sticks to make the bracing.

So back when I built this trestle I must have made the undersides of the bins out of cardboard or something. Tried to fill the bins with coal and glue in place. Came back the next day all dry and there was a small pile of coal under each shute. Look closer and the bottom of each bin bowed down 


Now I have some styrene props in there and new coal drying in the bins.


side note: you have to use alcohol to wet coal or it will just clump up when you hit it with glue. So I will have to go back and Dullcote the whole area to get rid of all the white spots the alcohol left. Model Railroading is fun! Insert smiley with spinning propeller on hat here.

The white spots are from spraying alcohol on a surface that already has Dullcote.
