I think Mike is right on the 80' spacing. Here is a 1947 photo in Brier Hill Youngstown along the Erie main:

The steel mill gondolas on the other side of the fence are 40 footers.

Chris, Mike, I don't claim to know anything about the Erie (other then its fast SFRD GFX connection). That photo clearly shows close spacing. The 40 pole per mile standard obviously didn't apply there..... wait, didn't you guys run on 5' gauge at one time? :D

Sooooo does anyone have a couple boxes of Atlas telephone poles they won't need?  :D

A box of 12 is going for like $20 on ebay and when cut up for their arms, only gives me 5 poles per pack. They are out of stock everywhere, but MBK had them for like $2.50.

Tried painting Bluford corn. Used Krylon "leaf green". I think it needs to be a lighter color with more tan in it.

I was told two years ago by a hobby shop owner that Atlas quit making them.  A damn shame if true.

^ That'd be a shame.  They do seem to produce them in bunches......and then stop for awhile.

I know I had to hunt them down a couple years back, and then viola.  They resurfaced shortly there after.

The Atlas poles are pretty much the only game in town, but I've always thought they seemed a little to big, more like power polis than typical line side telephone/telegraph/communication poles. And the proto photos show 8 to 10 insulators per crossarm. I've been waiting for years for really railroads lineside poles; I had some hope when Rapido did their HO poles, but that seems to have come and gone...

Terrific layout thread; really top notch work.

Didn't you caption a photo on the Weekend Update thread that it's spring on the Mahoning Division?  If so, tasseling corn?!  In springtime?!

Sokramiketes picture of the poles on the curve also shows the two rows of different poles lineside.

Also the poles were pretty short except where the lines had to go over roads or tracks. You get a nice up and down look with that.

What Chris, no double crossbars?  :D

The Atlas poles could use more insulators, but I'm sticking with them now. And I now have enough poles on the way to finish, Thanks guys!   :D

Got Skibbe's field glued together and mounted to a piece of sheet styrene:

Right in the middle you see a strip painted with Testors OD green. I think I will add a little green to this and dry brush with OD over it.

There is also Bachmann, Model Power, and Greenmax for plastic poles. I will be using Century Foundry poles along the roads.
