You could go with something wrecked, or being wrecked:

Or the building that used to be there:

People never seem to include old, abandoned, partially-demolished, leaning, derelict, etc structures on model layouts. But it gives a sense of past/present to the scene. And yes, even in "the old days" there were still abandoned, partially-burned, shabby, rundown and etc buildings.

Still working on it, but wanted to throw some paint down on the river bed.

TOO BLUE!  :scared:  Added some more black.

The way the lights shine at the mirror it makes it look sunny over "there"

I may have to put a strip of LEDs above the water to make it reflect correctly.

Still need more black I think.

Remember to go darker in the middle and outside of bends.

More black and some edge fade:

Same light in both photos.

I hate to be a prick, but to me that stream looks more like a deep water shipping channel than a meandering midwestern creek.  If it were me, I would add more green and fill the inner banks with silt, a la Lance:

I need a lot more murky brown in it. The real Mahoning river

Yes, more brown too, and one or two trees hanging over the banks.

That may be TODAY's Mohoning River -- but back in 1948 (pre-EPA) the brown probably had green or rusty orange steaks running down it, ribbons of oil sheen, town storm (possibly sewage) drain outflows into it, etc. Rivers back east were pretty messed up then.
How realistic do you want to go?

In the last proto photo I posted above, compare with a Howard Fogg painting of the same bridge:

Ariel shows the same bridge at the bottom, but the sky is reflecting in the murky river.

BTW try to recognize any of that now:

Wow they even replaced the bridge I was standing on:
https://www.google.com/maps/@41.1223747,-80.6843542,3a,27.6y,111.67h,85.71t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sY9Gq8RmlotQisLzXRNuNiw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

https://www.google.com/maps/@41.1172652,-80.6781519,3808a,20y,90h/data=!3m1!1e3

And I'm not modeling the Mahoning River, but yeah it's not a clear river. In 1840 it was the P&O canal:

Murky it is, but that is not a real river.  Lance gets an A for natural river features in his old layout, but this proto shot is a carved up channel.

Try some military olive drab. It should drop your color right into your proto shots.

In other news. Like it or love it I pasted this up at the end of the road on this side of town:

And I proceeded to fuse these turnouts into one solid piece :scared:

In the foreground will be a team track ramp. Hopefully this guy will be laser cutting one of these for me:

I will use the larger section of it.
